University Field (Jacksonville State)
University Field is a 2,000-seat softball stadium on the east side of the campus of Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. Per Physical Plant Director Dave Thompson, the bleacher seating capacity is 525 but could be pushed to 600 if needed. It serves as the home field of the Jacksonville State Gamecocks softball team and served as the home field of the Jacksonville State Gamecocks baseball team until 1995, when that team moved to Rudy Abbott Field on the west side of campus. History University Field, located on the east side of campus near the intersection of Pelham Road ( SR-21) and Nisbet Street ( SR-204), served as the original home field of the Jacksonville State Gamecocks baseball team, most notably during their 1990 and 1991 Division II national championship seasons. Jacksonville is a city in Calhoun County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census the population was 12,548, which is a 49% increase since 2000. It is included in the Anniston-Oxford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is home to Jacksonville State University, which is a center of commerce and one of the largest employers in the area. History Jacksonville was founded in 1833 on land purchased from Creek Indian Chief "Du-Hoag" Ladiga. First called Drayton, the town was renamed to honor President Andrew Jackson in 1834. There are a couple Civil War monuments in town, including a statue of Major John Pelham in the city cemetery and a statue of a Confederate soldier in the middle of the square. Jacksonville State University (JSU) is a public university in Jacksonville, Alabama. Founded in 1883, Jacksonville State offers programs of study in six academic schools leading to bachelor's degree, bachelor's, master's degree, master's, education specialist, and doctorate degrees in addition to certificate programs and continuing education opportunities. In the Fall semester of 2011, JSU began offering the school's first doctoral degree, Doctor of Science in Emergency Management. In 2016, the university gained approval to offer its second doctorate, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. The university was founded as Jacksonville State Normal School, and in 1930, the name changed to Jacksonville State Teachers College, and again in 1957, to Jacksonville State College. Jacksonville State Gamecocks Softball
The Jacksonville State Gamecocks softball team represents Jacksonville State University in NCAA Division I college softball. As of July 1, 2023 the team participates in the Conference USA Conference (C-USA). Prior to the move they were in the ASUN, a league in which it had been a member from 1995 to 2003. Prior to that JSU played in the OVC. The Gamecocks are currently led by head coach Jana McGinnis. Coach McGinnis played basketball at JSU from 1987-1990. Assistant coaches are Mark Wisener and Julie Boland. The team plays its home games at University Field located on the university's campus. The Gamecocks reached the NCAA Super Regionals in 2009. State Route 21 (Alabama)
State Route 21 (SR 21) is a state highway that extends from the Florida state line, near Atmore in Escambia County to Piedmont in Calhoun County. The route travels almost the entire length of the state from the northeast to the southwest. It is the longest signed state route in Alabama. Route description Starting at the northern terminus of Florida State Road 97 at the Florida state line south of Atmore, the route travels north through Atmore, passing under an intersection with Interstate 65 at exit 57, then enters Monroe County and travels northeast through Frisco City and Monroeville and is concurrent with SR 47 for part of this section. State Route 204 (SR 204) is a highway that runs from U.S. Route 431 (US 431) at Crystal Springs (just north of Wellington) to SR 21 at Jacksonville. It is two lanes in its entirety. Route description SR 204 travels through rural territory except in Jacksonville. It carries a speed limit until entering Jacksonville. This highway is often used by motorists who travel between Jacksonville and areas accessible by US 431, such as Gadsden. Beginning at US 431 at Crystal Springs, a small water recreation park, the road makes a wide left-hand curve and then a sharp, right-hand curve just east of its western terminus. It then passes beneath a narrow, substandard railroad trestle after which an uphill curve takes the road past a former elementary school site.
