University Cup
The David Johnston University Cup is a national collegiate sports award, presented annually to the champion of a season-ending tournament played by U Sports men's ice hockey teams in Canada. The UQTR Patriotes are the current champions for the 2021–2022 season. The Alberta Golden Bears have won the most championships with 16, and have also appeared in another seven finals. Originally called the CIAU University Cup in 1962, with minor changes through the decades when Canada's national university sports organization changed its own name, the trophy's name was changed on March 13, 2018, to honour David Johnston, a few months after he served as Governor General of Canada. The 2020 championship tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic after two quarter-final games had already been played. 2019 U Sports University Cup
The 2019 U Sports Men's University Cup Hockey Tournament (57th annual) was held March 14–17, 2019, in Lethbridge, Alberta and played at the ENMAX Centre. The Lethbridge Pronghorns, a member of U Sports Canada West conference, are the designated host for this awarded year. The ENMAX center is located 15 minutes from campus, in south Lethbridge. This event marks the first appearance of the tournament in Lethbridge and 10th time in Alberta (7 times in Edmonton and 2 times in Calgary). The New Brunswick Reds won their 8th title over the defending champion Alberta Golden Bears. UNB last won the University Cup in 2017. This marked only the 2nd victory for an Atlantic program in 10 trips to Alberta (the other victory was Moncton, in 1981, hosted by Calgary). The tournament format remained unchanged: 8 teams, single elimination and Bronze medal games, with 3 conference champions, 3 conference runner-ups, OUA Bronze winner and host. Clare Drake
Clare James Drake (October 9, 1928 – May 13, 2018) was a Canadian ice hockey coach. He was the most successful coach in Canadian Interuniversity Sport men's hockey history. In 28 years as the head coach of the University of Alberta men's ice hockey team, he coached the Alberta Golden Bears to six University Cup championships and 17 Canada West conference championships. The "dean of coaching," Clare developed the game for more than 40 years, coaching at the high school, university, Olympic and WHA level. The only university coach to win a national championship in both hockey and football in the same year (1967), he was instrumental in the development of the National Coaching Certification and Coach Mentorship Programs. Tom Watt (ice Hockey)
Tom Watt (born June 17, 1935) is a professional ice hockey scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). Watt has served as a coach in the NHL for 11 seasons, including seven as a head coach, four as assistant coach and one as development coach. As head coach of the Winnipeg Jets (1972–96), Winnipeg Jets, he won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL Coach of the Year in 1981–82. Early career In 1964 Watt became the head of men's Physical education, phys-ed at Monarch Park Collegiate Institute, Monarch Park Secondary School in Toronto. The UNB Reds are the athletic teams that represent the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. 2013 CIS University Cup
The 2013 CIS Men's University Cup Hockey Tournament (51st Annual) was held March 14–17, 2013. It was the first of two consecutive CIS Championships to be held at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon hosted by the University of Saskatchewan. The defending champions were the McGill Redmen, but they were unable to defend their title, having been eliminated in the first round of the OUA-East playoffs by the Nipissing Lakers. The best team in each Pool advanced to the final. All pool games must be decided by a win, there were no ties. If a pool has a three-way tie for 1st (all teams have 1-1 records) than GF/GA differential among the tied teams is the first tie-breaker. The Toronto Varsity Blues is the intercollegiate sports program at the University of Toronto. Its 43 athletic teams regularly participate in competitions held by Ontario University Athletics and U Sports. The Varsity Blues traces its founding to 1877, with the formation of the men's football team.
