University College (University Of Melbourne)
University College (UC) is a residential college affiliated with the University of Melbourne in Australia. It was formerly known as University Women's College and was established in 1937 as the first of the Melbourne residential colleges to permit female residents. In 1975 the college became co-residential. The college is situated in the suburb of Parkville. University College houses 340 undergraduate and graduate students each year from the University of Melbourne, RMIT University, Monash University Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Victorian College of the Arts, Australian Catholic University and other universities in close proximity to its campus. University College was renovated between 2007 and 2008 to include a new recreation complex with indoor sporting and other facilities including a design studio, TV room, gym, band room and a spacious multi-purpose area with billiard and table tennis tables. Myra Roper
Myra Ellen Roper (1911–2002) was a British-born Australian educationalist, author, broadcaster, and expert on China. She was principal of University Women's College, at the University of Melbourne from 1947 to 1960. Roper wrote five books about China to encourage sympathy and acceptance of the new People's Republic of China, including a book for children. Her papers are collected in the National Library of Australia. Greta Hort
Grethe Hjort (1903–1967) was a Danish-born professor of Danish and English literature. After graduating from the University of Copenhagen, she moved to Cambridge where she studied at Newnham College, earning a Ph.D. in 1931 and subsequently becoming a Pfeiffer research fellow at Girton College. While there, she obtained British citizenship and changed her name to Greta Hort. In 1938 she moved to Australia where she was appointed principal of University Women's College at the University of Melbourne. After resigning in 1946, she moved to Prague where she undertook biblical research until 1956. She then returned to Denmark, becoming Professor of English Literature at Aarhus University from 1958 until her death in 1967.
