United States At The 2004 Summer Paralympics
The United States sent a delegation to compete at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece. A total of 235 U.S. competitors took part in 18 sports; the only sport Americans did not compete in was soccer 5-a-side. The United States finished fourth in the gold and overall medal count, behind China, Great Britain and Canada. The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) is the National Olympic Committee and the National Paralympic Committee for the United States. It was founded in 1895 as the United States Olympic Committee, and is headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Swimming at the 2004 Summer Paralympics, in the Olympic Aquatic Centre (Athens), Olympic Aquatic Centre was competed in freestyle swimming, freestyle, backstroke and butterfly stroke, butterfly (classes Sn), the breaststroke (classes SBn) and Medley swimming, individual medley (classes SMn). *Swimmers with a physical disability were assessed on muscle strength and the scope and coordination of movement, and their impact on different swimming styles. Susan Katz
Susan Katz is an American Paralympic wheelchair basketball player. She has won a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Paralympics. She was previously a producer at ESPN. Early life Katz was born in Olney, Maryland with mild spina bifida but later moved to California. At the age of ten, her legs became paralyzed after a failed spinal cord surgery. While her parents encouraged her to walk with crutches and braces, she insisted on using a wheelchair. Katz later attended Quince Orchard High School and the University of Illinois, where she played on the wheelchair basketball team. Career Katz qualified for the 1996 Summer Paralympics where she competed in discus, javelin and shot put. After qualifying for the U.S. Paralympics Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team in 2004, Katz was a member of the team that won the gold medal at the Paralympic Games in Athens. Emily Hoskins is an American wheelchair basketball player. As a member of the United States women's national wheelchair basketball team, she has won two gold medals at the Summer Paralympic Games. Early life Hoskins was born in 1983 in Streator, Illinois to parents Greg and Linda. Her father Greg was the advertising manager at The Times-Press and general manager at papers in West Frankfort and Marion, Illinois. Hoskins was born with neuroblastoma, which eroded into her spinal cord and permanently damaged the nerves in her legs. Growing up, Hoskins became involved in wheelchair basketball while in high school and joined the St. Louis Junior Rolling Rams. Patricia "Patty" Phelps de Cisneros is a Venezuelan art collector and philanthropist who focuses on Latin American modernist and contemporary art from Brazil, Venezuela, and the Río de la Plata region of Argentina and Uruguay. Mikhaila Rutherford
Mikhaila Rutherford is an American former paralympic swimmer. She won three gold medals and one silver at the 2004 Summer Paralympics. Early life Rutherford was born in a small Russian village around 30 kilometers from Chernobyl, which was the site of a nuclear disaster in 1986. As a result of the disaster, Rutherford was born premature and missing limbs. Due to her disability, her parents put her up for adoption where she was taken in by an American woman at the age of four.
