The 1952 United States Senate election in Michigan was held on November 4, 1952 alongside a special election to the same seat. Republican Senator Arthur Vandenberg died in office in April 1951. Governor G. Mennen Williams appointed journalist Blair Moody to fill Vandenberg's seat until a successor could be duly elected. Moody then lost the special election to complete Vandenberg's term and the regularly scheduled 1952 election to U.S. Representative Charles E. Potter, both held on November 4. Arthur Edson Blair Moody (February 13, 1902 – July 20, 1954), known as Blair Moody, was a journalist and Democratic U.S. Senator from the state of Michigan. Background Moody was born in New Haven, Connecticut, the son of Arthur Edson Blair Moody and Julia Downey Moody. and attended the public schools in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from Brown University with a degree in economics in 1922. Moody attended the University of Michigan; he received his A.B. degree in 1949, and his LL.B. degree in 1952. He was an instructor in history at the Moses Brown School, a preparatory school in Providence, in 1922-23. A solid athlete, Moody lettered in football, baseball and track at Brown. Arthur Vandenberg
Arthur Hendrick Vandenberg Sr. (March 22, 1884April 18, 1951) was an American politician who served as a United States senator from Michigan from 1928 to 1951. A member of the Republican Party, he participated in the creation of the United Nations. He is best known for leading the Republican Party from a foreign policy of isolationism to one of internationalism, and supporting the Cold War, the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and NATO. He served as president pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1947 to 1949. Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in a family of Dutch Americans, Vandenberg began his career as a newspaper editor and publisher. In 1928, Republican Governor Fred W. Cheboygan ( ) is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 4,876. It is the county seat of Cheboygan County. The name of the city shares the name of the county and probably has its origin from the Cheboygan River, although the precise meaning is no longer known. It may have come from an Ojibwe word ''zhaabonigan'' meaning "sewing needle". Alternatively, the origin may have been "Chabwegan," meaning "a place of ore." The 1952 United States Senate elections was an election for the United States Senate which coincided with the election of Dwight D. Eisenhower to the presidency by a large margin. The Republicans took control of the senate by managing to make a net gain of two seats, which was reduced to one when Wayne Morse (R-OR) became an independent. The Republicans still held a majority after Morse's switch. This election was the second time in history (after 1932) that the party in power lost their majority and the Senate Majority Leader lost his own re-election bid. (In addition, this was the second consecutive election in which a sitting Democratic Senate leader lost his seat.) Special elections to the United States Senate are held to fill the vacancies that occur when a senator dies or resigns before the completion of their six-year term. Winners of these special elections typically serve the remainder of the term of the senator who has caused the vacancy. General elections to the U.S. Congress are held in November of even-numbered years. New Congresses convened on March 4 of the following year until 1934, and since then, new Congresses have begun on January 3 of the following year.
