United States Senate Election In New York, 1815
The 1815 United States Senate election in New York was held on February 7, 1815, by the New York State Legislature to elect a U.S. Senator (Class 1) to represent the State of New York in the United States Senate. Background Obadiah German had been elected in 1809 to this seat, and his term would expire on March 3, 1815. At the State election in April 1814, a Democratic-Republican majority was elected to the Assembly, and eight of the nine State Senators up for election were Democratic-Republicans. The 38th New York State Legislature met from September 26 to October 24, 1814; and from January 31 to April 18, 1815, at Albany, New York. Nathan Sanford
Nathan Sanford (November 5, 1777 – October 17, 1838) was an American politician. Early life Sanford was born on November 5, 1777, in Bridgehampton, New York. He was the son of Thomas Sanford and Phebe (née Baker) Sanford, a family of farmers and tradesmen. He attended Yale University, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in New York City. Career In 1803, he was appointed as United States Attorney for the District of New York, and remained in office until 1815 when the district was split into the Northern and the Southern District of New York. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1808-09 and 1811. In 1811, he was elected Speaker on January 29, but could not attend the session after February 10 because of ill health. Federalist Party
The Federalist Party was a Conservatism in the United States, conservative political party which was the first political party in the United States. As such, under Alexander Hamilton, it dominated the national government from 1789 to 1801. Defeated by the Jeffersonian Republicans in 1800, it became a minority party while keeping its stronghold in New England and made a brief resurgence by opposing the War of 1812. It then collapsed with its last presidential candidate in 1816. Remnants lasted for a few years afterwards. Jabez Delano Hammond
Jabez Delano Hammond (August 2, 1778 – August 18, 1855) was an American physician, lawyer, author and politician. Life Hammond was born in New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He practiced medicine in Reading, Vermont, but afterward studied law and followed that profession at Cherry Valley. He was a Democratic-Republican member of the United States Congress from 1815 to 1817, a member of the New York State Senate from 1817 to 1821, and a member of the Council of Appointment in 1818. In 1825, he was appointed one of the commissioners in the settlement of the claims of New York State against the Federal Government. In April 1825, he was appointed one of three State Road Commissioners, the other two were Nathaniel Pitcher and George Morell. The New York State Assembly is the lower house of the New York State Legislature, with the New York State Senate being the upper house. There are 150 seats in the Assembly. The New York State Senate is the upper house of the New York State Legislature; the New York State Assembly is its lower house. Its members are elected to two-year terms; there are no term limits. Philetus Swift (June 26, 1763 in Kent, Litchfield County, Connecticut – July 24, 1828 in Phelps, Ontario County, New York) was an American politician. Life He was the son of Elisha Swift (born 1731) and Mary Ransom (born 1738). One of Swift's older brothers was future Brigadier General John Swift. On April 4, 1786, he married his first wife Electra Goodrich in Sharon, Connecticut. On May 22, 1793, he married his second wife Sally Deane (1774–1820?) in Phelps, New York, and their son was Deane Swift (1794–1818). On November 26, 1823, he married his third wife Fanny (or Fauna, Fawnia, Faunia) Cole (c. 1792–1880), and their daughter was Electra Jane Swift (1825–1904). James Emott
James Emott (March 9, 1771 – April 7, 1850) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1790, and commenced practice in Ballston Center. He was land commissioner to settle disputes of titles to military reservations in Onondaga County, New York in 1797, and in 1800 removed to Albany, New York. He was elected as a Federalist to the 11th and 12th United States Congresses, holding office from March 4, 1809, to March 3, 1813. Emott was a member from Dutchess County of the New York State Assembly from 1814 to 1817, and was Speaker in 1814. In 1815, he was the Federalist candidate for U.S. Senator from New York but was defeated by Nathan Sanford. He was First Judge of the Dutchess County Court from 1817 to 1823, and Judge of the Second Circuit Court from 1827 to 1831.
