The United States Minister to Hawaii was an office of the United States Department of State to the Kingdom of Hawaii during the period of 1810 to 1898. Appointed by the President of the United States with the consent of Congress, the Minister to Hawaii was equivalent in rank to the present-day ambassador of the United States to foreign governments. As principal envoy of the United States government to the monarch of Hawaii, the Minister to Hawaii often dealt in affairs relating to economic, military and political matters affecting both nations. The Republic of Hawaii ( Hawaiian: ''Lepupalika o Hawaii'') was a short-lived one-party state in Hawaii between July 4, 1894, when the Provisional Government of Hawaii had ended, and August 12, 1898, when it became annexed by the United States as an organized incorporated territory of the United States. In 1893 the Committee of Public Safety overthrew Kingdom of Hawaii Queen Liliuokalani after she rejected the 1887 Bayonet Constitution. Luther Severance (October 26, 1797 – January 25, 1855) was a United States representative and diplomat from Maine. Life He was born in Montague, Massachusetts on October 26, 1797. He moved with his parents to Cazenovia, New York in 1799. He attended the common schools, and learned the printer's trade in Peterboro, New York. He established the Kennebec Journal in Augusta, Maine in 1825. He was elected a member of the Maine House of Representatives, and served in the Maine State Senate. Benjamin Franklin Angel (November 28, 1815 – September 11, 1894) was an American lawyer, politician and diplomat. Life Benjamin Franklin Angel was born in Burlington, New York, the son of Benjamin Angel and Abigail (Stickney) Angel. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in Geneseo. He was Surrogate of Livingston County from 1836 to 1840 and from 1844 to 1847. He married Julia Jones. He was a delegate to the 1852 Democratic National Convention at Baltimore. In 1853, his health having become impaired, he accepted an appointment as United States Consul at Honolulu, then in the Kingdom of Hawaii. In 1855, he was sent by President Franklin Pierce to China as Special Commissioner to settle a dispute between some American merchants and the Chinese government regarding the exaction of export duties. Elisha Hunt Allen (January 28, 1804 – January 1, 1883) was an American congressman, lawyer and diplomat, and judge and diplomat for the Kingdom of Hawaii. Early life Elisha Hunt Allen was born January 28, 1804, in New Salem, Massachusetts. His father was Massachusetts minister, lawyer, and politician Samuel Clesson Allen (1772–1842) and mother was Mary ( née Hunt) Allen (1774–1833). He attended New Salem Academy and graduated from Williams College in 1823. Career Allen was admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced practice in Brattleboro, Vermont. In 1830 he moved to Bangor, Maine and entered into practice with John Appleton (born 1804), who would subsequently become Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Court. Appleton would also marry Allen's sister Sarah in 1834.
