United States Attorney For The District Of Indiana
The United States Attorney for the District of Indiana was the United States attorney responsible for representing the United States in the United States District Court for the District of Indiana. The U.S. Attorney prosecuted criminal cases and acted on behalf of the Federal Government both defending and prosecuting civil cases. The District of Indiana was created on March 3, 1817. The longest established district, at 111 years, it was finally divided into the Northern District of Indiana and the Southern District of Indiana on April 21, 1928. United States Attorney
United States attorneys are officials of the U.S. Department of Justice who serve as the chief federal law enforcement officers in each of the 94 U.S. federal judicial districts. Each U.S. attorney serves as the United States' chief federal criminal prosecutor in their judicial district and represents the U.S. federal government in civil litigation in federal and state court within their geographic jurisdiction. U.S. attorneys must be nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate, after which they serve four-year terms. Currently, there are 93 U.S. attorneys in 94 district offices located throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Alvin Peterson Hovey
Alvin Peterson Hovey (September 6, 1821 – November 23, 1891) was a Union general during the American Civil War, an Indiana Supreme Court justice, congressman, and the 21st governor of Indiana from 1889 to 1891. During the war he played an important role in the Western theatre, earning high approval from General Ulysses Grant, and uncovered a secret plot for an uprising in Indiana. As governor, he launched several legal challenges to the Indiana General Assembly's removal of his powers, but was mostly unsuccessful. He successfully advocated election reform before he died in office. John Edward Lamb (December 26, 1852 – August 23, 1914) was an American lawyer who served one term as a U.S. Representative from Indiana from 1883 to 1885. Biography Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Lamb attended the common schools and was graduated from the Terre Haute High School. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1873, commencing practice in Terre Haute. He served as prosecuting attorney of the fourteenth judicial circuit 1875-1880. Congress Lamb was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1883 – March 3, 1885). Later career and death Afterwards, he resumed the practice of law in Terre Haute. He was appointed United States district attorney for Indiana July 10, 1885, and served until August 16, 1886.
