United States Ambassador To Algeria
The ambassador of the United States to Algeria is the official representative of the president of the United States to the head of state of Algeria. Until 1962, Algeria had been under the dominion of France. Independence from France was formally declared on July 3, 1962. The United States and France both formally recognized Algeria on that same day. The Ottoman government had recognized the United States in 1795, but formal diplomatic relations had not been established. The U.S. has had consular representation in Algeria intermittently since 1796. On September 29, 1962, diplomatic relations between Algeria and the United States were formally established when the U.S. Consulate General in Algiers was raised to embassy status. William J. Elizabeth Moore Aubin is an American diplomat and State Department official who has served as the United States ambassador to Algeria since 2022. She served the acting principal deputy assistant secretary and deputy assistant secretary for Regional Multilateral Affairs from January 20, 2021 to June 7, 2021. A letter of credence (french: Lettre de créance) is a formal diplomatic letter that designates a diplomat as ambassador to another sovereign state. Commonly known as diplomatic credentials, the letter is addressed from one head of state to another, asking them to give credence (french: créance) to the ambassador's claim of speaking for their country. The letter is presented personally by the ambassador-designate to the receiving head of state in a formal ceremony, marking the beginning of the ambassadorship. Mary Ann Casey (born November 11, 1949) is an American retired diplomat who was a career Foreign Service Officer and U.S. Ambassador to Algeria (1991–1994) and Tunisia (1994–1997). Life and career Casey was born in Boulder, Colorado on November 11, 1949. She graduated with a degree in international relations from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1970, and spent most of her overseas career in northern Africa. Richard Bordeaux Parker (July 3, 1923 – January 7, 2011) was an American diplomat, who was as a Foreign Service Officer, and an expert on the Middle East. Parker served as Ambassador to Algeria, Lebanon and Morocco. He was the brother of U.S. Army officer David Stuart Parker. Early life Parker was the son of Col. Roscoe Parker, a U.S. Army officer (Cavalry), and grew up in U.S. Army posts across the southwest with a stint in Vermont and another in Kansas. He attended Kansas State University, but left in 1943 to join the U.S. Army during World War II.
