The Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (united) ( uk, Соцiал-демократична партія України (об'єднана); СДПУ(о)), is a Ukrainian political party that was originally established as the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine. At the 1998 and 2002 parliamentary elections it won parliamentary seats, but has since then failed to win any seats. Yuriy Ivanovych Zahorodnyi ( uk, Юрій Іванович Загородній; born 7 May 1959) is a Ukrainian politician and a People's Deputy of Ukraine of the 9th convocation. Early life and career Yuriy Ivanovych Zahorodnyi was born on 7 May 1959 in Hrebinky, in what was then the Soviet Union. He began his working career in 1976 as a locksmith in Hrebinky branch of agricultural machinery. In 1986, he graduated from the faculty of history at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. From 1986 to 1989, Zahorodnyi worked as a teacher in Hrebinky secondary school, and from 1989 to 1995, he was principal of the secondary school in Doslidnytske. Political career In 1995, Zahorodnyi became a monitoring advisor of the Office of the President of Ukraine, and worked intermittently in the job for five years until 2000. Parliamentary elections were held in Ukraine on 27 March 1994, with a second round between 2 and 10 April. Party of Democratic Revival of Ukraine (PDVU) was a political party in 1990-96 that was created as an offshoot of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In 1996 along with number of other parties, it merged into the People's Democratic Party. Formation With the beginning of perestroika (movement for transformation) in the USSR and process of glasnost (transparency), democratization of society, discontent was created in the ranks of the Communist Party as an opposition to its conservative party's top.
