United Goans Party
The United Goans Party is a political party in state of Goa. It was formed in 1963 in the former union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu, with Jack de Sequeira as its party leader, when multiple regional parties merged during the Konkani language agitation. Formation After Goa's accession into the Indian union in 1961, Goa became a union territory with its own legislature. Elections to the state assembly were scheduled to be held in 1963. There were calls from many sections in Goa and the neighbouring state of Maharashtra to merge the tiny state into Maharashtra. This demand was spearheaded by the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. Sensing that the merger would mean the gradual disappearance of Goa's distinct identity and culture, four parties merged to form the United Goans Party in September 1963. Jack De Sequeira
Jack de Sequeira (Born João Hugo Eduardo de Sequeira; 20 April 1915 – 17 October 1989), popularly known as Dr Jack de Sequeira; also known as Jak Siker according to local naming conventions, was an Indian politician and is widely considered in Goa to be the "''Father of the Opinion Poll"'', which led to the former territory attaining statehood in 1987. He was Goa's first Leader of the Opposition when the Legislative Assembly was launched in 1963. Charan Singh
Chaudhary Charan Singh (23 December 1902 – 29 May 1987) served as the 5th Prime Minister of India between 28 July 1979 to 14 January 1980. Historians and people alike frequently refer to him as the 'champion of India's peasants.' Charan Singh was born on 23 December 1902 in a rural peasant Hindu Jat family of the Teotia clan of village Noorpur, United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. Bharatiya Lok Dal
Bharatiya Lok Dal (English: Indian Peoples' Party) was a political party in India. The BLD or simply BL was formed at the end of 1974 through the fusion of seven parties opposed to the rule of Indira Gandhi, including the Swatantra Party, the Utkal Congress, the Bharatiya Kranti Dal, and the Socialist Party. The leader of the BLD was Charan Singh. In 1977, the BLD combined with the Jan Sangh and the Indian National Congress (Organization) to form the Janata Party. Erasmo De Sequeira
Erasmo Jesus de Sequeira (1938/1939 - 16 July 1997) was an Indian politician, social worker and parliamentarian from Goa. He represented the Marmagoa parliamentary constituency twice from 1967–1977. He has been described as a "man of letters"; and was known for his fluency in many languages. Personal life Erasmo de Sequeria was the son of Dr. Jack de Sequeira and Lilia Margarida de Gouveia Pinto. His father was the founder of the United Goans Party and also the first Leader of Opposition in the Goa assembly. He is popularly known as the Father of the Opinion Poll in Goa.
