Unione Philharmonic Society
The L'Unione Philharmonic Society (Banda Unjoni), based in Luqa, Malta, is one of the major Musical ensemble, bands in Malta. It is the first musical society in Luqa, founded in 1880. History Early years In 1880 Mro. Vincezo Camilleri founded the l'Unione Philharmonic Society known as L-Banda Unjoni. Mro. Camilleri lived in the village of Luqa and he was a musician by profession. He was married to a Luqa girl named Maria Grazzja née Fava and had five children. On Mro. Camilleri's own initiative he gathered a number of youths in Luqa and started to teach them music and how to play an instrument. This was the birth of the first musical organisation in Luqa. It was in this year that Mro. Vincenzo Camilleri composed the first musical piece called Marcia L'Unione 1880. In 1883 when Mro. Luqa
Luqa ( mt, Ħal Luqa, , ) is a town located in the Southern Region of Malta, 4.3 km away from the capital Valletta. With a population of 5,945 as of March 2014, it is a small but densely populated settlement which is typical of Malta's older towns and villages. Luqa is centered around a main square which contains a church dedicated to St. Andrew. The patron saint's traditional feast is celebrated on the first Sunday of July, with the liturgical feast being celebrated on 30 November. The Malta International Airport is located in Luqa. Notable residents of the town included Michelangelo Sapiano (1826–1912), a well-known clockmaker and inventor whose work includes the clock in the parish church's belfry. Vincenzo Costa (Gallarate, 30 August 1900 – Milan, 27 November 1974) was an Italian Fascist politician and soldier, the last federal secretary of the Fascist Party of Milan. Biography Costa was born to a Romagnol father and a Milanese mother, into a family with Risorgimento traditions. At the age of fifteen he enlisted in a paramilitary organization called "Sursum Corda", training with one of the volunteer battalions in his free time during his studies. Two years later, during the Great War, he falsified his identity documents (he was still seventeen) in order to enlist in the Royal Italian Army and join his father, who was already fighting at the front. He thus joined the 5th Alpini Regiment, Edolo Battalion, fighting in Trentino and on the Asiago plateau; during a cadet officer course he met and befriended Aldo Resega.
