Union Deposit, Pennsylvania
Union Deposit is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in South Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census the population of Union Deposit was 407 residents. Union Deposit (formerly called Unionville and Uniontown) was laid out in 1833 by Isaac Hershey (west end) and Philip Wolfersberger (east end). The village's original growth and namesake comes from construction of the Union Canal, which deposited goods in the area, upon where the village boomed from various commercial enterprises. Geography The community is in southeastern Dauphin County, along the southeastern edge of South Hanover Township. Its southern and eastern border follows Swatara Creek, a southward-flowing tributary of the Susquehanna River. The Harrisburg–Carlisle metropolitan statistical area, officially the Harrisburg–Carlisle, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area, and also referred to as the Susquehanna Valley, is defined by the Office of Management and Budget as an area consisting of three counties in South Central Pennsylvania, anchored by the cities of Harrisburg and Carlisle. Sand Beach (variant name Sandbeach) is an unincorporated community in South Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States, situated in the Harrisburg-Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area, in the vicinity of the census-designated place of Hershey. Pennsylvania Route 39 (PA 39) is a state highway located in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. PA 39 runs from North Front Street near Harrisburg east to U.S. Route 322 (US 322) and US 422 near Hummelstown and Hershey. The route passes through the northern and eastern suburbs of Harrisburg and passes by Hersheypark, Giant Center, as well as the primary production factory for The Hershey Company. Between Harrisburg and Manada Hill, it is known as Linglestown Road, from Manada Hill to Hershey as Hershey Road and from Hershey to near Hummelstown and Hershey as Hersheypark Drive. Union Canal (Pennsylvania)
The Union Canal was a towpath canal that existed in southeastern Pennsylvania in the United States during the 19th century. First proposed in 1690 to connect Philadelphia with the Susquehanna River, it ran approximately 82 mi from Middletown on the Susquehanna below Harrisburg to Reading on the Schuylkill River. Construction began in 1792 during the George Washington Administration, but financial difficulties delayed its completion until 1828. Called the "Golden Link," it provided a critical early transportation route for shipping anthracite coal and lumber eastward to Philadelphia. Closed in the 1880s, remnants of the canal remain, most notably the Union Canal Tunnel, a hand-built engineering marvel that is the oldest existing transportation tunnel in the United States.
