Umeå University ( sv, Umeå universitet; Ume Sami: ) is a public research university located in Umeå, in the mid-northern region of Sweden. The university was founded in 1965 and is the fifth oldest within Sweden's present borders. As of 2015, Umeå University has over 36,000 registered students (approximately 16,000 full-time students), including those at the postgraduate and doctoral level. It has more than 4,000 employees, half of which are teachers/researchers, including 310 professors. Internationally, the university is known for research relating to the genome of the poplar tree and the Norway Spruce, and its highly ranked Institute of (industrial) Design. The Academy of Fine Arts at Umeå University is a Swedish art school. It was founded in 1987 in a former factory by the river of Uman. Every year 12 new students are accepted to the school, and a total of 60 students currently study at the academy. The school is part of the Umeå Arts Campus. The Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics, USBE, or Handelshögskolan vid Umeå Universitet, is the business school of Umeå University in the north of Sweden, founded in 1989 "to strengthen education in research and business while contributing to the community". About 2000 students currently study at USBE. Umeå School Of Architecture
Umeå School of Architecture (abbreviated UMA) was founded in 2009 as the fourth academic school in Sweden to provide a professional degree in architecture. It is part of Umeå University. The five-year architectural programme started in fall 2009 at provisionary premises in central Umeå, but subsequently moved to a new building designed by Danish architect firm Henning Larsen Architects, at the same campus as the Umeå Institute of Design and the Umeå Academy of Fine Arts at the Umeå Arts Campus. Umeå Arts Campus is the name of a former industry area that recently (2009–2012) was rebuilt to house several of the arts educations at Umeå University in Sweden. The arts campus will be an education center for architecture, design and artwork.
