Odysseus ( ; grc-gre, Ὀδυσσεύς, Ὀδυσεύς, OdysseúsOdyseús, ), also known by the Latin variant Ulysses ( , ; lat, UlyssesUlixes), is a legendary Greek king of Ithaca and the hero of Homer's epic poem the ''Odyssey''. Ulysses "Slow Kid" Thompson (August 28, 1888 – March 17, 1990) was a comedian, singer, tap and acrobatic dancer whose nickname was inspired by his ability to perform a comical, and incredibly slow, dance routine. His career included work in circus, medicine, minstrel, vaudeville, and Broadway. Early years Ulysses was born in Prescott, Arkansas, to George Washington Thompson, and Hanna Pandora Driver. His mother died of typhus when Ulysses was seven years old, and he ran away from home at age fourteen. Initially, he worked in positions of traditional labor, but he obtained the early skills of an entertainer while dancing in the street for nickels and dimes. His experiences led to a job performing a Juba Dance in a traveling medicine show. Ulysses would dance and tell jokes, providing entertainment to the crowds who came to see the "Doctor". Ulysses Shelton (July 1, 1917 – June 13, 1981) was an American Democratic politician who served as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1969 to 1978. Ulysses Mercur (August 12, 1818 – June 6, 1887) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania and chief justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Early life and education Ulysses Mercur was born in Towanda, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1842. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Towanda in 1843. He was a delegate to the 1856 Republican National Convention. He was president judge of the thirteenth judicial district of Pennsylvania from 1861 until March 4, 1865, when he resigned to enter Congress. Ulysses Samuel Guyer (December 13, 1868 – June 5, 1943) was a U.S. Representative from Kansas. Born near Paw Paw, Illinois, Guyer attended the public schools, Lane University at Lecompton, Kansas, and the University of Kansas School of Law at Lawrence, Kansas. He was admitted to the bar in 1902 and commenced practice in Kansas City, Kansas. He served as judge of the first division city court of Kansas City from 1907-09. He served as mayor of Kansas City, Kansas from 1909 to 1910. Guyer was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Edward C. Ulysses S. Grant-Smith (November 18, 1870 – August 27, 1959) was an American career diplomat who served as Minister to Albania and Minister to Uruguay during the interwar period. Biography He was originally from Washington County, Pennsylvania. A career foreign service officer, he began serving as a diplomat in 1903, and arrived in Copenhagen on 18 July 1917, to take up the position of Counselor at the US Legation there. Ulysses Currie (July 10, 1937 – December 27, 2019) was an American politician from Maryland. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented District 25 in Prince George's County, first in the house of delegates from 1987 to 1995, then in the senate from 1995 to 2019.
