Ulster Hockey Association
The Ulster Hockey Union is the governing body for field hockey in Ulster. It is affiliated to Hockey Ireland. It organises a number of leagues and cup competitions for clubs and schools in the province. These include the Ulster Senior League, the Kirk Cup and the Ulster Shield. Over 70 clubs are affiliated to the union. Foundation The modern Ulster Hockey Union was founded in May 2009 following the merger of the Ulster Branch of the Irish Hockey Association and the Ulster Women's Hockey Union. The UBIHA was originally formed in December 1896. Founding members of the original association included the North Down, Cliftonville and Antrim hockey clubs. At a special general meeting on 15 October 1897 at the Royal Avenue Hotel, Belfast, members of the association agreed to form the Ulster Senior League. Ulster Schoolgirls' Senior Cup (field Hockey)
The Ulster Senior Schoolgirls' Cup is an annual competition competed for by schools affiliated to the Ulster Hockey Association, a branch of the Irish Hockey Association. The competition has been in existence since 1907 and is currently sponsored by the Belfast Telegraph. Since 1980, the winners have qualified to represent Ulster in the Kate Russell All-Ireland Schools Hockey Cup. The most successful school is Methodist College Belfast with 21 wins (18 outright wins and 3 shared wins). The current holder is The Royal School, Armagh. Trophy The trophy is a small silver cup mounted on a plinth on a wooden shield. Format The competition is run through an open draw format. The first round is held in November, progressing through to a showpiece final held in early March. The final attracts a crowd of roughly 1000 people, which is large for an attendance at a hockey match in Ulster. Shirley McCay
Shirley McCay (born 7 June 1988) is an Ireland women's field hockey international. She was a member of the Ireland team that played in the 2018 Women's Hockey World Cup final. McCay has played in the Women's Irish Hockey League for Old Alex, Ulster Elks and Pegasus. She was a member of the Ulster Elks team that won two successive Irish Senior Cup titles in 2014–15 and 2015–16. Since 2015 she has been Ireland's most capped women's field hockey international. According to some sources she is also "Ireland's most capped sportswoman in any code" and the holder of "the most international caps by any Irish athlete (male or female) across any sport". Maeve Kyle
Maeve Esther Enid Kyle, OBE, née Shankey (born 6 October 1928), is an Irish Olympic athlete and hockey player. She was born in County Kilkenny. She competed in the 100m and 200m in the Melbourne Olympics and subsequently in the Rome Olympics and Tokyo Olympics (where she reached the semi-finals of both the 400m and 800m). She took bronze in the 400m at the 1966 European Indoor Athletics Championships in Dortmund. She won four gold medals in the W45 category at the 1977 World Masters Championship in Gothenburg in the 100m, 400m, high jump, and long jump. She held World Masters records in the W40 category for the 100m (12.00 secs) and 400m (55.30 secs), in the W45 category for the 100m (12.50 secs), and in the W50 category for the long jump at 5.04m. Jackie McWilliams
Jackie Amanda McWilliams (born 18 February 1964), also known as Jackie Burns, is a former women's field hockey player from Northern Ireland who represented both Ireland and Great Britain at international level. She represented Great Britain at the 1992 Summer Olympics, winning the bronze medal. Domestic teams McWilliams played club level field hockey for Randalstown and Ballymena. She was still playing for Ballymena in 2011 when in her late forties. McWilliams also represented Ulster at interprovincial level. Violet McBride (born 16 October 1954) is a former women's field hockey player from Northern Ireland who represented both Ireland and Great Britain at international level. She represented Great Britain at the 1988 Summer Olympics. In 1989 she was awarded the . In 2011 she was inducted into the Irish Hockey Association Hall of Fame. Margaret Gleghorne
Margaret Gleghorne, also known as Maggie Gleghorne, is a former women's field hockey player from Northern Ireland who represented both Ireland and Great Britain at international level. Domestic teams Ballymena Academy Between 1967 and 1974 Gleghorne attended Ballymena Academy. In 1972–73 she was a member of the academy team that were joint winners of the Ulster Senior Schoolgirls' Cup. Martin Sloan
Martin Sloan, also referred to as Marty Sloan, is a former field hockey player from Northern Ireland who represented Ireland and Great Britain at international level. Between 1982 and 1995 he made 149 senior appearances for Ireland. Between 1987 and 1995 he captained Ireland on 107 occasions. Stephen Alexander Martin (born 13 April 1959) is a former field hockey player from Northern Ireland who represented both Ireland and Great Britain at international level. Between 1980 and 1991 he made 135 senior appearances for Ireland. He also captained the Ireland team. He represented Ireland at the 1983, 1987 and 1991 EuroHockey Nations Championships and at the 1990 Men's Hockey World Cup. Eugene Magee (born 1 April 1986) Ireland men's field hockey international. He was a member of the Ireland team that won the bronze medal at the 2015 Men's EuroHockey Nations Championship. He also represented Ireland at the 2016 Summer Olympics and at the 2018 Men's Hockey World Cup. Iain Lewers (born 5 January 1984) is a field hockey player from Northern Ireland who represented Ireland, England and Great Britain at international level. He represented Great Britain at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. Harold David Judge (1936–2015), also known as David Judge, was an Irish-born Great Britain and Ireland men's field hockey international who represented Great Britain at the 1964 Summer Olympics, and between 1957 and 1978 made 124 senior appearances for Ireland. He also represented Ireland at the 1970 and 1972 EuroHockey Nations Championships and at the 1978 Men's Hockey World Cup.
