Ulrich Habsburg-Lothringen
Ulrich Habsburg-Lothringen (born 1941 in Wolfsberg, Austria) is an Austrian forester and politician, who was formerly in the Green Party of Austria, but is now non-partisan. He is a member of the Habsburg Family who wanted to participate in the election for the Austrian Federal President in the 2010 election. However, being member of a formerly ruling family, he was not eligible to do so. That law has been cancelled since, so he can now participate. He thought about another try for the following presidential election, which was held in April 2016, but finally decided to endorse the non-partisan judge Irmgard Griss instead. He is the nephew of former Austrian Crown Prince Otto von Habsburg. All parties in the Austrian National Council voted for allowing members of ruling or formerly ruling families to participate on national elections. Irmgard Griss, also known as Irmgard Griss-Reiterer (born 13 October 1946), is an Austrian politician, lawyer and judge who served as President of the Supreme Court of Justice from 2007 to 2011. She registered as an independent candidate at the 2016 presidential election and came in third position. Education and career Irmgard Griss graduated in 1965 from the trade academy in Graz, and obtained in 1970 the title of ''dr. juris'' at the University of Graz. From 1971 to 1975 she was research assistant at the university, while she completed a Master of Laws at Harvard Law School. Griss was in 1978 lawyer in Vienna and from 1979 to 1980 a judge at the county court for commercial matters in Vienna, and from 1981 to 1987 a judge at the trade court in Vienna. The National Council (german: Nationalrat) is one of the two houses of the Austrian Parliament and is frequently referred to as the lower house. The constitution endows the National Council with far more power than the Federal Council. Responsibilities The National Council is where Austria's federal legislative authority is concentrated; for a bill to become federal law, it must be resolved upon by this chamber. Bills passed by the National Council are sent to the Federal Council for corroboration. If the Federal Council approves of the bill or simply does nothing for eight weeks, the bill has succeeded.
