Ulmen
Ulmen is a town in the Cochem-Zell district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is the seat of the like-named ''Verbandsgemeinde'' – a kind of collective municipality – to which it also belongs. Geography Location The town lies in the Eifel some 11 km northwest of Cochem. Constituent communities To Ulmen belong the outlying centres – '' Stadtteile'' – of Meiserich, Vorpochten and Furth. Geology The Ulmener Maar, only about 11,000 years old, is not only a maar but also Continental Europe’s newest volcano north of the Alps. It is 37 m deep. Volcanic activity can be observed at depths of more than 4 m in the form of rising gas bubbles. The ''Ulmener Maar'' has no natural water inflow or outflow. The two tunnels that hold the water at a constant level today were dug in the 19th century. Ulmener Maar
The Ulmener Maar is a maar in the Eifel mountains of Germany in the immediate vicinity of the town of Ulmen (Eifel), Ulmen in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The lake is up to 37 metres deep and is surrounded by an embankment of tuff with an average height of 20 metres, which was formed from the erupted material of the former volcano. By the southern edge of the embankment are the ruins of a knight's castle, Ulmen Castle dating to the 11th century. IUGS geological heritage site In respect of it being the 'youngest volcano in central Europe, situated in Vulkaneifel, the volcanic region where the model of formation of maars by phreatomagmatic eruptions was established', the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) included 'The Holocene Ulmen Maar' in its assemblage of 100 'geological heritage sites' around the world in a listing published in October 2022.
