Ulises (orca)
Ulises (also spelled Ulysses) is a male orca who lives at SeaWorld San Diego in California. He was captured off the coast of Iceland in 1980 and is currently the oldest male orca in captivity as of 2022. Capture and early life Ulises was captured on November 7, 1980, at Reydarfjördur, Iceland, when he was approximately 3 years old. He was taken to Sædýrasafnið, also known as the Hafnarfjörður Aquarium, in Iceland, a facility in which orcas recently captured from Iceland were housed while they adjusted to captivity. After spending around a month in Iceland, Ulises was sold to a private zoological company in Tarragona, Spain, Río León Safari. Life in Spain Ulises spent two years at Río León Safari before they became unable to take care of him properly. He was taken in by the Barcelona Zoo in July 1983. Orca
The orca or killer whale (''Orcinus orca'') is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family, of which it is the largest member. It is the only Extant taxon, extant species in the genus ''Orcinus'' and is recognizable by its black-and-white patterned body. A cosmopolitan species, orcas can be found in all of the world's oceans in a variety of marine environments, from Arctic Ocean, Arctic and Southern Ocean, Antarctic regions to tropical seas. Marineland Of Antibes
The Marineland of Antibes is a theme park founded in 1970 by Roland de La Poype in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes), in the French Riviera. On 26 hectares it includes a marine zoological park with dolphinarium, a water park (''Aquasplash''), a children's play park (''Kid's Island''), mini golf (''Aventure Golf'') and a three-star hotel (''Marineland Resort''). It is the property of the Spanish multinational company Parques Reunidos, whose majority shareholder is the British investment fund Arle Capital Partners. The current director is Arnaud Palu. Wikie (orca)
Wikie (born June 1, 2001) is a female killer whale (orca) who lives at the Marineland of Antibes in Antibes, France. In 2009, Wikie was artificially inseminated with semen from Ulises, a male orca who currently lives at SeaWorld San Diego in California. The artificial insemination resulted in the birth of her first calf (Moana) on March 16, 2011. Her calf was the first killer whale to be born through artificial insemination in Europe. Wikie gave birth to her second calf (Keijo) on November 20, 2013. Dawn Brancheau
Dawn Therese Brancheau ( LoVerde, April 16, 1969 – February 24, 2010) was an American senior animal trainer at SeaWorld. She worked with orcas at SeaWorld Orlando for fifteen years, including a leading role in revamping the ''Shamu (SeaWorld show), Shamu'' show, and was SeaWorld's Poster child, poster girl. She was killed by an orca, Tilikum (orca), Tilikum. Tilikum was also involved in the deaths of two other people: Death of Keltie Byrne, Keltie Byrne and Daniel P. Dukes. Life and career Brancheau was born Dawn Therese LoVerde in Cedar Lake, Indiana, and was the youngest of six children. She set her heart on becoming a ''Shamu'' trainer during a family vacation to Orlando. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with degrees in psychology and animal behavior. Kasatka
Kasatka (1976 – August 15, 2017) was a wild caught female orca who lived at SeaWorld San Diego. Life Kasatka was captured off the southeastern coast of Iceland on October 26, 1978 with another young female whale named Kahana. Both were estimated to be around 2 years old. The two whales were housed in a sea pen in Grindavík before being shipped to SeaWorld later that year. Kasatka showed occasional aggression to humans. In 1993, she tried to bite trainer Ken Peters during a show, and again in 1999. On November 30, 2006, Kasatka grabbed Peters again and dragged him underwater twice during their show. Peters survived with minor injuries. After suffering incurable pneumonia from 2008 to 2017, Kasatka was euthanized at age 40 on August 15, 2017. Corky (killer Whale)
Corky II, often referred to as just Corky, is a female captive orca from the A5 Pod of northern resident orcas. At approximately the age of four, Corky was captured from Pender Harbour off the coast of British Columbia on December 11, 1969. She has lived at SeaWorld San Diego in San Diego, California since 1987. As of 2022, she is the oldest and longest kept captive orca. Early life Corky was born in 1965. Her mother, designated A23, nicknamed "Stripe", died in 2000. Corky, along with a young unnamed male and a young female later named Patches, were sold to Marineland of the Pacific, in Palos Verdes, California. As of 2022, Corky is the only surviving captured orca from her family group. She is designated A16. Bottlenose Dolphin
Bottlenose dolphins are aquatic mammals in the genus ''Tursiops.'' They are common, cosmopolitan members of the family Delphinidae, the family of oceanic dolphins.
