The Anglo-Saxons were a Cultural identity, cultural group who inhabited England in the Early Middle Ages. They traced their origins to settlers who came to Britain from mainland Europe in the 5th century. Uhtred The Bold
Uhtred of Bamburgh (sometimes Uchtred); died c. 1016), was ruler of Bamburgh and from 1006 to 1016 the ealdorman of Northumbria. He was the son of Waltheof I, ruler of Bamburgh (Bebbanburg), whose family the Eadwulfings had ruled the surrounding region for over a century. Uhtred's death by assassination was described in ''De obsessione Dunelmi'' and has been interpreted as beginning of a blood feud. Accomplishments In 995, according to Symeon of Durham, when the remains of St Cuthbert were transferred from Chester-le-Street to Durham, Uhtred went to Durham with his monks to clear the site of the new cathedral. Ughtred James Kay-Shuttleworth, 1st Baron Shuttleworth, (18 December 1844 – 20 December 1939), known as Sir Ughtred Kay-Shuttleworth, Bt, between 1872 and 1902, was a British landowner and Liberal politician. He was Under-Secretary of State for India and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster under William Ewart Gladstone in 1886 and Parliamentary and Financial Secretary to the Admiralty under Gladstone and Lord Rosebery between 1892 and 1895. Background Shuttleworth was the son of the physician, civil servant and social reformer James Kay-Shuttleworth. Sir Anthony Ughtred or Oughtred, Knight banneret ( – 6 October 1534) was as an English soldier and military administrator during the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII. Ughtred fought in Ireland, the Anglo Scottish border and both on land and at sea in France. He served with distinction as captain of Berwick, marshal of Tournai and governor of Jersey. In 1530, he married Elizabeth Seymour, sister to Jane, future third wife to Henry VIII. Elizabeth Oughtred
Elizabeth Seymour ( – 19 March 1568) was a younger daughter of Sir John Seymour of Wulfhall, Wiltshire and Margery Wentworth. Elizabeth and her sister Jane served in the household of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII. The Seymours rose to prominence after the king's attention turned to Jane. In May 1536, Anne Boleyn was accused of treason and adultery, and subsequently executed. On 30 May 1536, eleven days after Anne's execution, Henry VIII and Jane were married. Elizabeth was not included in her sister's household during her brief reign, although she would serve two of Henry VIII's later wives, Anne of Cleves and Catherine Howard. Evelyne Oughtred Buchanan
Evelyne Oughtred Buchanan, née Watson, (21 January 1883–21 November 1978), was a British artist, notable for her landscape paintings. Biography Buchanan was born in Stockton-on-Tees in the north-east of England. She attended school there before spending a single term at the Glasgow School of Art after which she moved to Newlyn in Cornwall. There, during 1910, she spent four months at the art school run by Stanhope Forbes and was greatly influenced by the work of other artists active in the area, notably Laura Knight and Lamorna Birch. Although largely self-taught as an artist, Buchanan later studied portraiture with Robert Heriot Westwater in Scotland and would eventually settle in Edinburgh. She abandoned painting for some years but resumed doing so in 1933 and continued until the early 1970s when her eyesight began to fail. Sir Henry Ughtred or Oughtred ( – June 1599) was a merchant and shipbuilder during the reign of Elizabeth I. One of his ships, the ''Leicester'' sailed with Sir Francis Drake against the Spanish Armada. He was elected MP for the seat of Marlborough in 1584 and of Great Bedwyn in 1589. A wealthy landowner, Ughtred played an active role in the Plantations of Ireland and was knighted by the Lord Deputy in 1593. Natasha Oughtred is an English ballerina and retired principal dancer with the Birmingham Royal Ballet. Biography Natasha Oughtred was born in North Cave, a village near Kingston upon Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Thomas Ughtred, 1st Baron Ughtred (also Oughtred; Outred), KG (1292 – before 28 May 1365) was an English soldier and politician. The eldest son and heir of Robert Ughtred, lord of the manor of Scarborough, Kilnwick Percy, Monkton Moor, and other places in Yorkshire. He was born in 1292, being eighteen years of age at his father's death, before 24 May 1310.
