The Uganda Game and Fisheries Department was the lead wildlife conservation agency of the Uganda Protectorate. It was merged into the Uganda Wildlife Authority in 1996. Uganda Protectorate
The Protectorate of Uganda was a protectorate of the British Empire from 1894 to 1962. In 1893 the Imperial British East Africa Company transferred its administration rights of territory consisting mainly of the Kingdom of Buganda to the British government. In 1894 the Uganda Protectorate was established, and the territory was extended beyond the borders of Buganda to an area that roughly corresponds to that of present-day Uganda. Entebbe
Entebbe is a city in Central Uganda. Located on a Lake Victoria peninsula, approximately southwest of the Ugandan capital city, Kampala. Entebbe was once the seat of government for the Protectorate of Uganda prior to independence, in 1962. The city is the location of Entebbe International Airport, Uganda's largest commercial and military airport, best known for the Israeli rescue of 100 hostages kidnapped by the militant group of the PFLP-EO and Revolutionary Cells (RZ) organizations. Entebbe is also the location of State House, the official office and residence of the President of Uganda. Etymology The word came from Luganda language ''e ntebe'' which means 'seat' / 'chair'. Uganda Wildlife Authority
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is a semi-autonomous Ugandan government agency that aims to conserve, manage and regulate Uganda’s wildlife. "UWA is mandated to ensure sustainable management of wildlife resources and supervise wildlife activities in Uganda, both within and outside the protected areas". As of April 2020, UWA manages ten national parks, twelve wildlife reserves, and fourteen wildlife sanctuaries. UWA also provides guidance for five community wildlife areas. It is governed by a board of trustees appointed by the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, currently Tom Butime. Charles Pitman (scientist)
Charles Robert Senhouse Pitman, DSO, MC (19 March 1890 – 18 September 1975) was a noted herpetologist, conservationist and friend of Joy Adamson. Early life Charles Pitman was born in Bombay and educated at the Royal Naval School, Eltham, at Blundell's School in Tiverton, and at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, which he left in 1909 having obtained a commission in the Indian Army. Military career After a brief initial posting, Pitman joined the 27th Punjabis with which he stayed from 1910 to 1921 when he retired from the army to take up farming in Kenya. During his army career, which spanned the First World War, Pitman fought in Mesopotamia (where he was awarded the DSO and MC), and also in Egypt and France. Bruce Kinloch
Bruce Kinloch MC (27 August 1919 – 21 June 2011) was a British army officer, wildlife conservation leader and author. He was born at Saharanpur in India and educated at Berkhamsted School in England. Military career Kinloch was commissioned into the 3rd Queen Alexandra's Own Gurkha Rifles after leaving Sandhurst in 1939, fought with them in Burma and on the Northwest Frontier, and won the Military Cross for his part in Battle of Sittang River Bridge in 1942. At the age of twenty-five, he commanded a battalion. Conservation career In 1947, Kinloch joined the Colonial Administrative Service, first as a Game Ranger on the Kilifi Coast of Kenya. He was Chief Game Warden in the Uganda Game and Fisheries Department for ten years; in 1960 he became Chief Game Warden of Tanganyika, a post he held until 1964. Nature, in the broadest sense, is the physical world or universe. "Nature" can refer to the phenomena of the physical world, and also to life in general.
