Udupiddy American Mission College ( ta, உடுப்பிட்டி அமெரிக்கன் மிஷன் கல்லூரி ''Uṭuppiṭṭi Amerikkaṉ Micaṉ Kallūri'') is a national school in Udupiddy, Sri Lanka. Point Pedro Electoral District
Point Pedro Electoral District was an electoral district of Sri Lanka between August 1947 and February 1989. The district was named after the town of Point Pedro in Jaffna District, Northern Province. Udupiddy Electoral District was carved out of the western part of the district in March 1960. The 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka introduced the proportional representation electoral system for electing members of Parliament. The existing 160 mainly single-member electoral districts were replaced with 22 multi-member electoral districts. Point Pedro electoral district was replaced by the Jaffna multi-member electoral district at the 1989 general elections, the first under the PR system, though Point Pedro continues to be a polling division of the multi-member electoral district. Ceylonese Parliament
The Parliament of Ceylon was the legislative body of British Ceylon & Dominion of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) established in 1947 by the Soulbury Constitution, prior to independence on 4 February 1948. Parliament replaced the State Council of Ceylon. Parliament was based on the Westminster model with an upper house, the Senate, whose members were indirectly elected or appointed, and a lower house, the House of Representatives, whose members were directly elected or appointed. The House of Representatives consisted of 101 members, of whom 95 were elected and six appointed by the Governor-General (increased to 157 in 1960, 151 elected and six appointed). The Senate consisted of 30 Members, of whom 15 were elected by the House of Representatives and 15 appointed by the Governor-General. Kandiah Neelakandan
Kandiah Neelakandan ( ta, கந்தையா நீலகண்டன்; 16 April 1947 – 18 February 2018) was a Sri Lankan Tamil lawyer and the lead partner in Neelakandan & Neelakandan (previously Murugesu and Neelakandan). He died on 18 February 2018 when he was 70 years old. Early life and family Neelakandan was educated at Udupiddy American Mission College and Jaffna Hindu College. After school he joined Sri Lanka Law College, graduating in 1969. Neelakandan was married to Sasithevi, daughter of V. Murugesu, his partner. Career Neelakandan was called to the bar as an attorney-at-law of the Supreme Court in 1970. He joined Murugesu and Kularatne in January 1970 as a Professional Assistant. He became a partner of the firm, which was renamed Murugesu and Neelakandan, in 1973. He was chief editor of the Bar Association Law Journal for many years. Education in Sri Lanka has a long history that dates back two millennia. While the Constitution of Sri Lanka does not provide free education as a fundamental right, the constitution mentions that 'the complete eradication of illiteracy and the assurance to all persons of the right to universal and equal access to education at all levels" in its section on directive principles of state policy at (27(2)(H). Sri Lanka's population had an adult literacy rate of 96.3% in 2015, which is above average by world and regional standards. American Ceylon Mission
The American Ceylon Mission (ACM) to Jaffna, Sri Lanka started with the arrival in 1813 of missionaries sponsored by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). Although they had originally planned to work in Galle, the British colonial office in Ceylon restricted the Americans to out-of-the-way Jaffna District, Jaffna due to the security concerns of the British who were warring with France at the time. The critical period of the impact of the missionaries was from the 1820s to early 20th century. During this time, they engaged in original translations from English language, English to Tamil language, Tamil, printing, and publishing, establishing primary, secondary and tertiary educational institutions and providing health care for residents of the Jaffna Peninsula.
