USS Williams (DD-108)
USS ''Williams'' (DD-108) was a in the United States Navy entering service in 1919, and was the second ship to bear the name. Following a brief stint in active service, the ship was laid up for 17 years before being reactivated during World War II. ''Williams'' transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II as part of Lend-Lease and was renamed HMCS ''St. Clair'' (I65), surviving the war and being scrapped in 1946. John Foster Williams
John Foster Williams (12 October 1743 – 24 June 1814) was an American mariner who served as an officer in the Massachusetts State Navy during the American Revolutionary War and later an officer in the Revenue-Marine. Career Williams was commissioned a captain in the Navy of Massachusetts and received command of the brig ''Hazard'' late in 1777. In the following year, he took her to sea in a fruitless search for British West Indiamen; but he and his ship eventually achieved success in 1779. While cruising in the West Indies, ''Hazard'' fell in with the privateer brigantine ''Active'' on 16 March. Shakedown cruise is a nautical term in which the performance of a ship is tested. Generally, shakedown cruises are performed before a ship enters service or after major changes such as a crew change, repair or overhaul.
