USS Watonwan (ID-4296)
USS ''Watonwan'' (ID-4296) was a United States Navy cargo ship in commission in 1919. ''Watonwan'' was a steel-Hull (watercraft), hulled, single-Propeller, screw cargo ship, freighter built for the United States Shipping Board in 1918 at Bristol, Pennsylvania, by the Merchant Shipbuilding Corporation. In 1919 she was taken over by the U.S. Navy for operation by the Naval Overseas Transportation Service (NOTS). Assigned Identification Number (Id. No.) 4296, she was placed in Ship commissioning, commission at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 4 February 1919. After loading 7,087 tons of flour, ''Watonwan'' departed Philadelphia on 19 February 1919, bound for the British Isles, and arrived in Falmouth, Cornwall, Falmouth, England, on 5 March 1919. After discharging a part of her cargo there, she departed Falmouth on 12 March 1919 and called at Plymouth, England, and Gibraltar before departing Gibraltar on 22 March 1919 for Italy. Watonwan River
The Watonwan River is a tributary of the Blue Earth River, long, in southern Minnesota in the United States. Via the Blue Earth and Minnesota rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River, draining an area of in an agricultural region. The Watonwan drains about a quarter of the Blue Earth River's watershed. The river was the site of the capture of Bob, Cole and Jim Younger (members of the James–Younger Gang) near Madelia in 1876. Geography The Watonwan River rises in Amboy Township, approximately southwest of Jeffers in central Cottonwood County, and flows generally eastwardly across flat till plains through northern Watonwan and western Blue Earth counties, past the city of Madelia. It flows into the Blue Earth River approximately southwest of Mankato and upstream of the Blue Earth's confluence with the Minnesota River.
