USS Tamaroa (AT-62)
USS ''Tamaroa'' (AT-62) was a U.S. Navy tugboat which served from 1936 until she was sunk in a collision in 1946. She is not to be confused with the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter USCGC ''Tamaroa'' (WMEC-166). History Nomenclature Tamaroa is an American Indian tribe of the Illinois Confederacy The Illinois Confederation, also referred to as the Illiniwek or Illini, were made up of 12 to 13 tribes who lived in the Mississippi River Valley. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Tamaroa occupied both sides of the Mississippi River between the mouths of the Illinois and Missouri rivers. USCGC Tamaroa (WMEC-166)
USCGC ''Tamaroa'' (WAT/WMEC-166), originally the United States Navy ''Cherokee''-class fleet tug , was a United States Coast Guard cutter. Following the U.S. Coast Guard custom of naming cutters in this class of ship after Native American tribes, she was named after the Tamaroa tribe of the Illiniwek tribal group. Construction and U.S. Navy operational history The ship was one of 70 of her class built for the U.S. Navy. As the fleet tug USS ''Zuni'', she saw action in World War II, including in the Marianas, Philippines, and Iwo Jima operations. After the war, she was transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard in 1946. U.S. Coast Guard operational history The bulk of ''Tamaroa''′s U.S. Coast Guard career was spent patrolling, working in drug interdiction, and fisheries protection. Illinois Confederacy
The Illinois Confederation, also referred to as the Illiniwek or Illini, were made up of 12 to 13 tribes who lived in the Mississippi River Valley. Eventually member tribes occupied an area reaching from Lake Michicigao (Michigan) to Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas. The five main tribes were the Cahokia, Kaskaskia, Michigamea, Peoria, and Tamaroa. The name of the confederation was derived from the transliteration by French explorers of to ''Illinois'', more in keeping with the sounds of their own language. The tribes are estimated to have had tens of thousands of members, before the advancement of European contact in the 17th century that inhibited their growth and resulted in a marked decline in population. USS ''Jupiter'' (AK-43) was an ''Aldebaran''-class cargo ship commissioned by the U.S. Navy for service in World War II. She was responsible for delivering necessary goods and equipment to ships and stations in the war zone.
