USS Nueces
USS ''Nueces'' (APB-40) is a ''Benewah''-class barracks ship of the United States Navy. She was notable for her service in the Vietnam War. Construction and career The ship was laid down on 2 January 1945, by the Boston Navy Yard and launched on 6 May 1945, sponsored by Miss Dorthy E. Dunnell. She was commissioned on 19 March 1946. The ship was put into the inactive in commissioned status at Atlantic Reserve Fleet, 6th Naval District from March 1946 until 1947. On 30 September 1955, she was decommissioned and placed in mothball status in Orange, Texas. Amid the United States involvement in the Vietnam War, she was converted to provide a mobile base for river patrol squadrons of the Mobile Riverine Force Task Force 117. She supported army infantry battalions of the 9th Infantry Division and acted as their command ship. Laying the keel or laying down is the formal recognition of the start of a ship's construction. It is often marked with a ceremony attended by dignitaries from the shipbuilding company and the ultimate owners of the ship. Vũng Tàu (''Hanoi accent:'' , ''Saigon accent:'' ) is the largest city of Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu province in southern Vietnam. The city area is , consists of 13 urban wards and one commune of Long Sơn Islet. Vũng Tàu was the capital of the province until it was replaced by the much smaller Bà Rịa city on 2 May 2012. 9th Infantry Division (United States)
The 9th Infantry Division ("Old Reliables") is an inactive infantry division of the United States Army. It was created as the 9th Division during World War I, but never deployed overseas. In later years, it would become an important unit of the U.S. Army during World War II and the Vietnam War. Mobile Riverine Force
In the Vietnam War, the Mobile Riverine Force (MRF) (after May 1967), initially designated Mekong Delta Mobile Afloat Force, and later the Riverines, were a joint US Army and US Navy force that comprised a substantial part of the brown-water navy. It was modeled after lessons learned by the French experience in the First Indochina War of Dinassaut and had the task of both transport (of soldiers and equipment) and combat. The primary base was at Đồng Tâm Base Camp, with a floating base at the base of the Mekong River. It played a key role in the Tet Offensive. Patrol Boat, Riverine, or PBR, is the United States Navy designation for a small rigid- hulled patrol boat used in the Vietnam War from March 1966 until 1975.
