USS Leedstown (AP-73)
USS ''Leedstown'' (AP-73), built as the Grace Line passenger and cargo ocean liner SS ''Santa Lucia'', served as a United States Navy amphibious assault ship in World War II. The ship had first been turned over to the War Shipping Administration (WSA) and operated by Grace Line as the WSA agent from February to August 1942 in the Pacific. In August the ship, at New York, was turned over to the Navy under sub- bareboat charter from WSA. She was sunk 9 November 1942 off the Algerian coast by a German submarine after German bombers caused damage the day before. ''Santa Lucia'' was the third of four sister ships sometimes dubbed "The Four Sisters" or "Big Four" ordered in 1930 by Grace Line for its Panama Mail Service from the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company of Kearny, New Jersey. Leedstown is an unincorporated community in Westmoreland County, in the U. S. state of Virginia. It is the site of the signing of the Leedstown Resolutions. The War Shipping Administration (WSA) was a World War II emergency war agency of the US government, tasked to purchase and operate the civilian shipping tonnage the United States needed for fighting the war. Both shipbuilding under the Maritime Commission and ship allocation under the WSA to Army, Navy or civilian needs were closely coordinated though Vice Admiral Emory S. Land who continued as head of the Maritime Commission while also heading the WSA. SS ''Argentina'' was a US turbo-electric ocean liner. She was completed in 1929 as SS ''Pennsylvania'', and refitted and renamed as SS ''Argentina'' in 1938. From 1942 to 1946 she was the War Shipping Administration operated troopship ''Argentina''. She was laid up in 1958 and scrapped in 1964. Building ''Pennsylvania'' was the last of three sister ships built by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company of Newport News, Virginia for the American Line Steamship Corporation, which at the time was part of J. Panama Pacific Line
Panama Pacific Line was a subsidiary of International Mercantile Marine (IMM) established to carry passengers and freight between the US East and West Coasts via the Panama Canal. Although IMM had begun preparations for this intercoastal service as far back as 1911, service began in May 1915 with the former Red Star Line (another IMM subsidiary line) ships and . Dorothy Marckwald
Dorothy “Dot” Marckwald (1898–1986) was a prominent American interior designer in the mid-20th century who focused primarily on the interiors of luxury ocean liners. Her most important works were the interiors for the SS ''America'' and the SS ''United States'', which was the fastest passenger liner of all time. She worked closely with William Francis Gibbs, one of America’s most renowned naval architects, and her own firm Smyth, Urquhart, & Marckwald, the only firm run by women to decorate the interior of such ships.
