USS Lansdale (DD-101)
The first USS ''Lansdale'' (DD-101) was a in the United States Navy during World War I and later designated, DM-6 in the years following. She was named in honor of Philip Lansdale, Philip Van Horne Lansdale. History ''Lansdale'' was Keel laying, laid down on 20 April 1918 by Fore River Shipbuilding Corporation, Quincy, Massachusetts. The ship was Ceremonial ship launching, launched on 21 July 1918, Ship sponsor, sponsored by Mrs. Ethel S. Lansdale, widow of Lieutenant Lansdale. The destroyer was Ship commissioning, commissioned on 26 October 1918 at Boston. Assigned to the Cruiser and Transport Force, ''Lansdale'' steamed to Norfolk, Virginia, Norfolk from 4 November to 7 November and joined a European bound convoy as escort on 12 November. Sailing via the Azores, she reached Gibraltar on 26 November for patrol duty in the Mediterranean Sea. Philip Lansdale
Philip Van Horne Lansdale (15 February 1858 – 1 April 1899) was an officer in the United States Navy. Biography Lansdale, born in Washington, D.C., graduated as Passed Midshipman from the United States Naval Academy, Naval Academy 18 June 1879. Commissioned ensign 1 June 1881, he served on Asiatic Station, Asiatic, North Atlantic Station, North Atlantic, and with the Mediterranean Squadron (United States), Mediterranean and Pacific Squadrons. Promoted to lieutenant 15 May 1893, he became executive officer of USS Philadelphia (C-4), ''Philadelphia'' upon her recommissioning at San Francisco, California, San Francisco 9 July 1898. After visiting Honolulu for ceremonies which transferred the sovereignty of the Territory of Hawaii, Hawaiian Islands to the United States, ''Philadelphia'', flagship of Rear Admiral Albert Kautz, Commander, Pacific Station, arrived Apia, Samoa, 6 March 1899.
