USS John M. Howard (IX-75)
USS ''John M. Howard'' (IX-75), previously the yacht ''Elsie Fenimore'', was an unclassified miscellaneous vessel, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for John Martin Howard. Ensign Howard, USNR, had graduated from the third class at the Advanced Mine School, later Mine Disposal School, and been sent to England to observe and gain experience with Royal Navy and Royal Engineers in mine disarming and disposal. He had been the first Navy mine disposal person killed when, on 11 June 1942, he was observing Lcdr. Roy Berryman Edwards, RN, DSO, BEM defusing a German TMA-1 magnetic influence naval mine that detonated on Corton sands near Lowestoft. The detonation left nothing but scattered debris from sea to cliffs and two hundred yards in each direction along the beach. John Martin Howard
John Martin Howard (20 August 1917 – 11 June 1942) was a United States Navy officer from Pennsylvania who served during World War II as a Naval mine disposalman. He died along with Lcdr. Roy Berryman Edwards in a naval mine explosion while observing the disarming of a German mine that washed ashore in England. Howard was the first U.S. Navy mine disposal personnel killed in the war. Howard and Edwards were recognized in a special plaque in the St. Nicolas minister church in Great Yarmouth, England and the USS John M. Howard (IX-75) was named in Howard's honor. Early life Howard was born in Chester, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Media High School and studied at Admiral Farragut Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy and Swarthmore College. Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division is a field activity of the United States Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). It is located 30 miles South of Washington, D.C. in Charles County, Maryland. Indian Head, Maryland
Indian Head is a town in Charles County, Maryland, United States. The population was 3,894 at the 2020 U.S. Census.
