USS Ingersoll
Two ships of the United States Navy have borne the name USS ''Ingersoll'', honoring members of the Ingersoll family. DD-652 was named for Rear Admiral Royal R. Ingersoll (1847–1931) — and for his grandson, Lieutenant Royal R. Ingersoll, II (1913–1942) who had died in the Battle of Midway, just weeks before the ship's christening. The Battle of Midway was a major naval battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II that took place on 4–7 June 1942, six months after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and one month after the Battle of the Coral Sea. Ceremonial ship launching involves the performance of ceremonies associated with the process of transferring a vessel to the water. It is a nautical tradition in many cultures, dating back thousands of years, to accompany the physical process with ceremonies which have been observed as public celebration and a solemn blessing, usually but not always, in association with the launch itself. Ship launching imposes stresses on the ship not met during normal operation and, in addition to the size and weight of the vessel, represents a considerable engineering challenge as well as a public spectacle.
