USS ''General G. O. Squier'' (AP-130) was the lead ship of General G. O. Squier class transport ship, her class of transport ship for the United States Navy, U.S. Navy in World War II. Decommissioned in 1946, she was sold privately in 1965 and renamed SS ''Pennmar'', and was eventually scrapped. Operational history ''General G. O. Squier'' was launched 11 November 1942 under United States Maritime Commission, Maritime Commission contract (MC Hull #1) by the Kaiser Shipyards, Kaiser Co., Inc. in Richmond, California; sponsored by Miss Mary Ann Somervell; acquired 30 August 1943 and commissioned 2 October. Landing Craft Infantry
The Landing Craft Infantry (LCI) were several classes of landing craft used to land large numbers of infantry directly onto beaches during the Second World War. They were developed in response to a British request for seagoing amphibious assault ships capable of carrying and landing substantially more troops than their smaller Landing Craft Assault (LCA). The result was a small steel ship that could land 200 men, traveling from rear bases on its own bottom at a speed of up to 15 knots. Some 923 were built starting in 1943, serving in both the Pacific and European theaters, including a number that were converted into heavily armed beach assault support ships. The LCI(L) supplemented the small LCAs/ LCVPs as a way to get many troops ashore before a dock could be captured or built. Operation Dragoon (initially Operation Anvil) was the code name for the landing operation of the Allied invasion of Provence (Southern France) on 15August 1944. Despite initially designed to be executed in conjunction with Operation Overlord, the Allied landing in Normandy, the lack of available resources led to a cancellation of the second landing. By July 1944 the landing was reconsidered, as the clogged-up ports in Normandy did not have the capacity to adequately supply the Allied forces. Concurrently, the French High Command pushed for a revival of the operation that would include large numbers of French troops. As a result, the operation was finally approved in July to be executed in August.
