USS ATR-31
USS ATR-31 was an ATR-1-class Rescue Ocean Tug of the United States Navy during World War II, and later the Peruvian Navy. Her fate is unknown. Ship History ''ATR-31'' was laid down by Northwest Shipbuilding Company on 7 September 1942 in South Bellingham, Washington. She was launched on 30 July 1943. U.S. Navy Service ''ATR-31'' was commissioned into U.S. Naval Service on 30 October 1943. During World War II, ''ATR-31'' was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and participated in the Ormoc Bay and Leyte landings, as well as operations in West New Guinea. After the war, she was decommissioned sometime in 1945. ''ATR-31'' was struck from the Naval Register in 1946. Northwest Shipbuilding
The points of the compass are a set of horizontal, radially arrayed compass directions (or azimuths) used in navigation and cartography. Philippine Liberation Medal
The Philippine Liberation Medal is a military award of the Republic of the Philippines which was created by an order of Commonwealth Army of the Philippines Headquarters on 20 December 1944, and was issued as the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. The decoration was presented to any service member, of both Philippine Commonwealth and allied militaries, who participated in the liberation of the Philippine Islands between the dates of 17 October 1944, and 2 September 1945. A full-sized medal was authorized and added on 22 July 1945. Navy Unit Commendation
The Navy Unit Commendation (NUC) is a United States Navy unit award that was established by order of the Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal on 18 December 1944. History Navy and U.S. Marine Corps commands may recommend any Navy or Marine Corps unit for the NUC that has distinguished itself by outstanding heroism in action against the enemy, but not sufficient to justify the award of the Presidential Unit Citation. A unit must have performed service of a character comparable to that which would merit the award of a Silver Star Medal for heroism, or a Legion of Merit for non-combat meritorious service to an individual. Battle Stars
A service star is a miniature bronze or silver five-pointed star inch (4.8 mm) in diameter that is authorized to be worn by members of the eight uniformed services of the United States on medals and ribbons to denote an additional award or service period. The Type V ship is a United States Maritime Commission (MARCOM) designation for World War II tugboats. Type V was used in World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Type V ships were used to move ships and barges. Type V tugboats were made of either steel or wood Hull (watercraft), hulls. There were four types of tugboats ordered for World War II. The largest type V design was the sea worthy long steel hull, V4-M-A1. The V4-M-A1 design was used by a number of manufacturers; a total of 49 were built. A smaller steel hull tugboat was the V2-ME-A1; 26 were built. The largest wooden hull was the V3-S-AH2, of which 14 were built. The smaller wooden hull was the V2-M-AL1, which 35 were built. Most V2-M-AL1 tugboats were sent to the United Kingdom for the war efforts under the lend-lease act.
