USS ''Bastion'' (ACM-6) was a in the United States Navy during World War II. ''Bastion'' was originally the USAMP ''Colonel Henry J. Hunt'' (MP-2) — a mine planter built in 1942 at Point Pleasant, West Virginia, by the Marietta Manufacturing Co. for the U.S. Army Mine Planter Service. She was acquired by the U.S. Navy from the U.S. Army on 4 January 1945, renamed ''Bastion'', converted to an auxiliary minelayer and commissioned at Charleston, South Carolina 9 April 1945; Lt. Henry Jackson Hunt
Henry Jackson Hunt (September 14, 1819 – February 11, 1889) was Chief of Artillery in the Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War. Considered by his contemporaries the greatest artillery tactician and strategist of the war, he was a master of the science of gunnery and rewrote the manual on the organization and use of artillery in early modern armies. His courage and tactics affected the outcome of some of the most significant battles in the war, including Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and most notably at Gettysburg, where his operational decisions regarding strategic cannon placement and conservation of ammunition for the Confederate main assault, contributed greatly to the defeat of Pickett's Charge. Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower is a decommissioned lighthouse located on the Frying Pan Shoals approximately southeast of Southport, North Carolina, and from Bald Head Island, North Carolina. The tower is currently privately owned and was formerly a bed and breakfast retreat, and is noted for its survival through several significant tropical storms. The light tower is modeled after a steel oil drilling platform, known as a "Texas Tower", on top of four steel legs that was engineered to be used as a lighthouse housing several Coast Guard members. York Spit Light
The York Spit Light was a lighthouse located at the mouth of the York River (Virginia), York River in the Chesapeake Bay, marking a long shoal paralleling the main channel into the river. History This light replaced Lightvessel, lightships stationed at this location beginning in 1853. Extra fender piles were added to the usual six pile structure in order to provide extra stability against the current. In 1903, riprap was placed around the piles for additional protection. A hurricane in September 1933 damaged the light. The house was removed and replaced with an automated light in 1960 as part of the program of decommissioning at that time. More recently, this light was damaged in a hurricane, and a separate light on a single pole was erected next to the old screw-pile foundation.
