UP Fighting Maroons Basketball
The UP Fighting Maroons are the collegiate men's baketball team of the University of the Philippines Diliman, which play in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the premiere sports league in the country. History UP is one of the founding members (1938) of the UAAP. It was also a founding member and the originator of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the year 1924. The Fighting Maroons won there first championship title in NCAA in the NCAA Season 0 (1924–1925), they also became the champions in NCAA Season 1 (1925–1926), and NCAA Season 2 (1926–1927) (as 3–peat champions). UP Fighting Maroons won their last championship in the NCAA in NCAA Season 5 (1929–1930). After 6 years, UP Fighting Maroons permanently withdrew from competing in NCAA. The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), established in 1938, is an athletic association of eight Metro Manila universities in the Philippines. The eight-member schools are Adamson University (AdU), Ateneo de Manila University (ATENEO), De La Salle University (DLSU), Far Eastern University (FEU), National University (Philippines), National University (NU), University of the East (UE), University of the Philippines Diliman (UP), and the University of Santo Tomas (UST). Nic Jorge
Nicanor Fortich Jorge Jr. (November 27, 1941 – June 13, 2020) was a Filipino basketball coach who has led the Philippines and Singapore men's national teams. He is also the founder of the Best Center, a sports training institution which has produced several national team and professional players. Early life and education Nicanor Fortich Jorge, Jr. was born on November 27, 1941, in Manila. He studied at the University of the Philippines Diliman where he took a BSE degree in physical education. He also played for the UP Fighting Maroons, with his performance helping him secure a tenure as coach of the collegiate team. Coaching career Jorge started his coaching career in the 1960s when he became head coach of the UP Fighting Maroons basketball team at age 21. In 1994, Jorge led the Maroons to a third place finish. The season opened on July 10, 1999, at the PhilSports Arena. It was the last broadcast by Silverstar Sports aired on PTV. ABS-CBN Sports was a sports division of the Philippine media conglomerate ABS-CBN, which aired some of the notable sporting events in the Philippines.
