UNLV Rebels Football Seasons
This is a list of seasons completed by the UNLV Rebels football team of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). UNLV's first football team was fielded in 1968. UNLV football began in 1968. After spending time in the Big West Conference between 1982 and 1995, and the Western Athletic Conference between 1996 and 1998, the Rebels joined the Mountain West Conference as one of the founding members in 1999, of which it has been a member since. UNLV Rebels Football
The UNLV Rebels football program is a college football team that represents the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The team is a member of the Mountain West Conference, which is a Division I Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) conference of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). The program, which began on September 14, 1968, plays its home games at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada. History Early history In 1967, Nevada Southern University announced that they would field a collegiate football program beginning on September 14, 1968 and announced that the team would be a Division II Independent and that Bill Ireland would be the program's first head coach. The Rebels played their first game of their inaugural season against the St. Mary's Gaels at Cashman Field in Las Vegas. The Rebels won the game, defeating the Gaels 27–20 in front of 8,000 fans. NCAA Division II Independent Schools
NCAA Division II independent schools are four-year institutions that compete in college athletics at the NCAA Division II level, but do not belong to an established athletic conference for a particular sport. These schools may however still compete as members of an athletic conference in other sports. A school may also be fully independent, and not belong to any athletic conference for any sport at all. The reason for independent status varies among institutions, but it is frequently because the school's primary athletic conference does not sponsor a particular sport. 1983 UNLV Rebels Football Team
The 1983 UNLV Rebels football team was an American football team that represented the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association during the 1983 NCAA Division I-A football season. In their second year under head coach Harvey Hyde, the team compiled a 7–4 record. In March 1985, the NCAA ruled UNLV to forfeit all of its victories from their 1983 and 1984 seasons due to playing with ineligible players. Harvey Hyde
Harvey Leslie Hyde (born July 13, 1939) is an American sports journalist and former football coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) from 1982 to 1985. Early career Hyde was born in Pasadena, California. 1981 UNLV Rebels Football Team
The 1981 UNLV Rebels football team was an American football team that represented the University of Nevada, Las Vegas as an independent during the 1981 NCAA Division I-A football season. In their sixth and final year under head coach Tony Knap, the team compiled a 6–6 record. A notable win was the road victory over eighth-ranked BYU in October, who were without starting quarterback Jim McMahon, replaced by sophomore Steve Young. Approaching age 67, Knap retired after the season, and was succeeded by Harvey Hyde, the head coach at Pasadena City College. Tony Knap
Anthony Joseph Knap (December 8, 1914 – September 24, 2011) was an American football coach. He was the head coach at Utah State University (1963–1966), Boise State University (1968–1975), and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (1976–1981). He compiled a career college football record of (). Knap also worked as a high school teacher and coach, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Early years and college The oldest son of Polish immigrants, Knap was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and graduated from Riverside High School (a.k.a. East), where he was an All-City selection in football in 1934. Along with three other Milwaukee freshman, he accepted a football scholarship to the University of Idaho in Moscow and played on the Vandals freshman team in the fall of 1935, then lettered for three seasons (1936–38) on the varsity under head coach Ted Bank.
