UFCW Local 1776 represents workers in Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs for the United Food and Commercial Workers. The larger majority of their members work in grocery stores. The number 1776 refers to the historical date in Philadelphia rather than it being a sequential number of local unions. History In 1937, The Retail Clerks & Managers Protective Association (retail clerks) Local 1357 was founded in Philadelphia by employees of American Stores and A&P. In 1963, Local 1357 of the retail clerks had 4,000 members in Philadelphia area supermarkets. By the end of the decade, through the organizing power of president Wendell Young III over 10,000 non-food retail workers and department store employees joined Local 1357. The Strategic Organizing Center (SOC), formerly known as the Change to Win Federation (CtW) is a coalition of North American labor unions originally formed in 2005 as an alternative to the AFL–CIO. The coalition is associated with strong advocacy of the organizing model. The coalition currently consists of The International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT); Service Employees International Union (SEIU); and United Farm Workers (UFW). Communications Workers of America (CWA) is affiliated with both the SOC and AFL–CIO. Retail Clerks International Association
The Retail Clerks International Union (RCIU) was a labor union that represented retail employees. History The RCIU was chartered as the "Retail Clerks National Protective Union" in 1890 by the American Federation of Labor. It later adopted the name Retail Clerks International Association, and subsequently became the Retail Clerks International Union. In 1979, the Retail Clerks merged with the Amalgamated Meat Cutters to form the United Food and Commercial Workers. In 1934 the RCIU created a local chapter in Milwaukee, which quickly grew to over 600 members. Soon after the RCIU petitioned the Boston Store to raise employee wages for its men and women and to also officially recognize the union, a move that the store's management refused with the justification that only a few of the department store employees were union members. The Amalgamated Meat Cutters (AMC), officially the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America, 1897–1979, was a labor union that represented retail and packinghouse workers. Wendell Young III
Wendell W. Young III (July 6, 1938 – January 1, 2013) was an American labor unionist who served as president of the UFCW Local 1776 for 43 years. During his term in office, he exerted influence over Philadelphia politics and was active in social justice issues. Early life Young grew up in Mayfair, Philadelphia, and first got involved in the Retail Clerks International Union (RCIU) Local 1537, at age 16, when he was working as a part-time store clerk. Young attended Saint Joseph's University, where he was heavily influenced by Jesuit philosophy, graduating in 1960. Young was introduced to politics by the John F. Kennedy 1960 presidential campaign.
