UEFA Euro 1984 Qualifying
The qualifying round for the 1984 European Football Championship consisted of 32 teams divided into seven groups; three of four teams and four of five teams. The qualifying round was played at various times between May 1982 and December 1983, with some groups concluding earlier than others. Qualified teams Seedings The draw took place on 8 January 1982 in Paris, France. 32 teams were drawn from the five pots into the seven groups. France qualified automatically as hosts. Central Stadium (german: Zentralstadion, ) was a stadium with a capacity of 120,000 in Leipzig which was initially used for matches of SC Rotation Leipzig. About 1.5 million cubic metres of debris from the World War II bombing of Leipzig was used in the stadium's construction. Its name derives from the Soviet "Central Stadium". Background After the 1896 Summer Olympics, the city of Leipzig began to plan a stadium. The Zentralstadion was built first for the sports students in the Sportforum Leipzig, with a capacity of 100,000. Next to it was an Olympic-style swimming stadium. After the sports university, rowing channel and the swimming stadium were established, plans were made for a new stadium downtown; Leipzig wanted to be awarded the Olympic Games. Joachim Streich
Joachim Streich (13 April 1951 – 16 April 2022) was a German footballer who won the bronze medal with East Germany at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Playing career Born in Wismar, Streich played as a striker for Aufbau Wismar from 1957 to 1963, TSG Wismar from 1963 to 1967, Hansa Rostock from 1967 to 1975, and 1. FC Magdeburg from 1975 to 1985. Between 1969 and 1984 he was capped 102 times for East Germany, scoring 55 goals. For a long time he was considered a member of the FIFA Century Club, but when FIFA changed regulations to no longer include games at the Olympic Games, four of his matches were deleted from his official FIFA record and he dropped out. António Garrido (referee)
António José da Silva Garrido OIH (3 December 1932 – 10 September 2014) was a Portuguese football referee. Career Born in Vieira de Leiria, Marinha Grande, Garrido was the first Portuguese referee to officiate a European Cup final in 1980. He refereed three matches in the FIFA World Cup, two in the 1978 and one in the 1982 – the 3rd place play-off match. He also refereed one match in the UEFA Euro 1980 and the first leg of 1977 European Super Cup. On 3 August 1983, Garrido received the title of Officer of the Order of Prince Henry. Although he was an accountant by profession, he continued involved in football after his forced retirement as a referee in 1982 due to age limit.
