1976 European Football Championship
The 1976 UEFA European Football Championship final tournament was held in Yugoslavia. This was the fifth UEFA European Championship, held every four years and endorsed by UEFA. The final tournament took place between 16 and 20 June 1976. Only four countries played in the final tournament, with the tournament consisting of the semi-finals, a third place play-off, and the final. This was the last tournament to have this format, as the tournament was expanded to include eight teams four years later. It was the only time that all four matches in the final tournament were decided after extra time, either on penalties or by goals scored. This was also the last tournament in which the hosts had to qualify for the final stage. Ladislav Petráš
Ladislav Petráš (born 1 December 1946) is a former Slovak football player. He played 19 matches for Czechoslovakia national team and scored six goals. Petráš was a participant at the 1970 FIFA World Cup, where he played three matches and scored two goals. Petráš also took part in the Euro 1976, where his team won the gold medal. After scoring Czechoslovakia's only goal against Brazil, Petráš celebrated kneeling and doing the sign of the cross, demonstrating his Catholic faith in defiance against the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia, which was contrary to any religious belief. Petras continues to be a Roman Catholic. In the second match of the tournament, Petráš scored the first goal of the match against Romania at the 4th minute. Dušan Galis
Dušan Galis (born 24 November 1949) is a Slovak politician, a former Czechoslovak football player and a former manager of ŠK Slovan Bratislava. In Czechoslovak league he played 226 matches, scoring 89 goals. He was capped 8 times for Czechoslovakia, scoring 1 goal. He was a participant at the 1976 European Football Championship where he became European Champion with his national team Career Football He played for the youth team of Dolný Kubín. Ján Švehlík (born 17 January 1950) is a former Slovak football player and later a football manager. He played for Czechoslovakia, for which he played 17 matches and scored 4 goals. František Veselý
František Veselý (7 December 1943, in Prague – 30 October 2009) was a Czech football player. He played on the right wing and was known for his technique. He spent his best football years playing for SK Slavia Prague. He played for Czechoslovakia, for whom he appeared in 34 matches and scored three goals. Jozef Barmoš (born 28 August 1954) is a former Slovak football coach and former player. He played in defence for Czechoslovakia, and won 52 international caps.
