: ''For information on all University of Alabama at Birmingham sports, see UAB Blazers'' The UAB Blazers baseball team is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. The team is a member of Conference USA, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. UAB's first baseball team was fielded in 1979. The team plays its home games at Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The Blazers are coached by Casey Dunn. Conference USA
Conference USA (C-USA or CUSA) is an intercollegiate athletic conference whose current member institutions are located within the Southern United States. The conference participates in the NCAA's Division I in all sports. C-USA's offices are located in Dallas, Texas. History C-USA was founded in 1995 by the merger of the Metro Conference and Great Midwest Conference, two Division I conferences that did not sponsor football. However, the merger did not include either Great Midwest member Dayton or Metro members VCU and Virginia Tech. Since this left an uneven number of schools in the conference, Houston of the dissolving Southwest Conference was extended an invitation and agreed to join following the SWC's disbanding at the end of the 1995–96 academic year. Graham Ashcraft
Douglas Graham Ashcraft (born February 11, 1998) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2022. Early life and amateur career Ashcraft grew up in Gurley, Alabama, and attended Huntsville High School. He was selected in the 12th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, but opted not to sign with the team. Ashcraft enrolled at Mississippi State University and began his college baseball career with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. As a freshman he went 2–0 with a 5.63 ERA and 25 strikeouts in ten appearances. Following the season Ashcraft transferred to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) to play for the UAB Blazers. List Of NCAA Division I Baseball Programs
The following is a list of schools that participate in NCAA Division I baseball. In the 2022 season, 301 Division I schools competed. These teams compete to go to the 64-team Division I baseball tournament and then to Omaha, Nebraska, and Charles Schwab Field, for the eight-team Men's College World Series (MCWS). Conference affiliations are current for the coming 2023 NCAA baseball season. Years of conference changes, indicated in footnotes, reflect baseball seasons, which take place in the calendar year after a conference change takes effect. Garrett Getts Whitlock (born June 11, 1996) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB). Listed at and , he throws and bats right-handed. Amateur career Whitlock attended Providence Christian Academy in Lilburn, Georgia. As a junior, he posted a 1.95 earned run average (ERA) along with a .369 batting average. Not selected as a high school prospect during the 2015 Major League Baseball draft, he enrolled at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he played college baseball for the UAB Blazers. Héctor Villanueva
Héctor José Alberto Villanueva Balasquide (born October 2, 1964), is a former professional baseball player who played catcher in the Major Leagues from 1990 to 1993. In 1991, he became the fourth player in the history of the Puerto Rico Baseball League to win the triple crown. Career Héctor Villanueva attended Cupeyville High School in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. He later went to the University of Alabama at Birmingham because his parents insisted that he attend college. His father was a salesman and his mother Lourdes was a schoolteacher. On March 26, 1985, he was signed as a free agent by a scout from the Cubs named Joaquin Velilla. Hector married Gizelle Krebs on December 26, 1987. Charles Brewer Hicklen (born February 9, 1996) is an American professional baseball outfielder for the Milwaukee Brewers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Kansas City Royals. Amateur career Hicklen graduated from Huntsville High School in Huntsville, Alabama. He played baseball as an outfielder and football as a quarterback. Hicklen committed to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), hoping to play college baseball and college football for the UAB Blazers. He played as a wide receiver for the football team until UAB ended its football program in December 2014.
