Uzmaston And Boulston And Slebech
Uzmaston, Boulston and Slebech is a community in Pembrokeshire, Wales, which includes the villages of Uzmaston, Boulston and Slebech, and the Haverfordwest suburb of Cartlett (an area in the western part of Haverfordwest, no longer marked on modern maps). Formation The community was formed in 2012 by the amalgamation of the community of Uzmaston and Boulston and the community of Slebech. It is divided into two electoral wards: Uzmaston & Boulston Ward and Slebech Ward. Operation There are six councillors for Uzmaston and Boulston Ward and two for Slebech Ward. Community Council meetings, which are open to the public, are held at either Uzmaston Village Hall or The Rhos Village Hall. Population The population at formation according to the 2011 census was 712. A community ( cy, cymuned) is a division of land in Wales that forms the lowest tier of local government in Wales. Welsh communities are analogous to civil parishes in England. There are 878 communities in Wales. History Until 1974 Wales was divided into civil parishes. These were abolished by section 20 (6) of the Local Government Act 1972, and replaced by communities by section 27 of the same Act. The principal areas of Wales are divided entirely into communities. Uzmaston
Uzmaston is a small parish in Pembrokeshire, Wales, about 2 kilometres south-east of Haverfordwest. The village, to the northwest of Boulston, forms part of the community of Uzmaston, Boulston and Slebech, and lies near the bank of the Western Cleddau. It contains the Grade II listed St. Ismael's Parish Church which has existed since at least 1230, and was extensively rebuilt in 1870-73 and restored in the 1990s. History Historically, Uzmaston and the surrounding parish belonged to the Hundred of Dungleddy. Its name is a compound word meaning "Osmund's farm". In 1993, five Roman coins were unearthed behind the church at Uzmaston. At the time of the 1851 census, Uzmaston belonged to a parish comprising an area of 2,070 acres with a population of 683 people, 307 male and 376 female. Boulston
Boulston is a small settlement and former parish on the left bank of the Western Cleddau river in Pembrokeshire, Wales, in the community of Uzmaston, Boulston and Slebech. History Boulston Manor The parish was in the ancient hundred of Dungleddy. It was marked on a 1578 parish map of Pembrokeshire. Boulston Manor was occupied from the 15th to 18th centuries by the Wogan family. When the estate was sold in 1797 the new owner, Major Dudley Acland, abandoned the old site, and built Boulston Lodge (now re-named Boulston Manor) a short distance to the northwest, described by the Royal Commission. A detailed survey of the old manor was carried out in 2012, and the site was determined to be at risk from river erosion. An outline history of the estate was published by the Royal Commission in 2000. Slebech
Slebech was a community (prior to 1974, a civil parish) in Pembrokeshire, Wales, which is now part of the combined community of Uzmaston and Boulston and Slebech, a sparsely populated community on the northern shore of the Eastern River Cleddau. The community shares boundaries with the communities of Wiston and Llawhaden and mainly consists of farmland and woodland. Much of the community is within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and Picton Castle's stable block loft is an important breeding roost for the rare Greater Horseshoe Bat. History Slebech is situated on the upper Eastern Cleddau and was once part of the Barony of Daugleddau. Haverfordwest (, ; cy, Hwlffordd ) is the county town of Pembrokeshire, Wales, and the most populous urban area in Pembrokeshire with a population of 14,596 in 2011. It is also a community, being the second most populous community in the county, with 12,042 people, after Milford Haven. Picton Castle
Picton Castle ( cy, Castell Pictwn) is a medieval castle near Haverfordwest in the community of Uzmaston, Boulston and Slebech, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Originally built at the end of the 13th century by a Flemish knight, it later came into the hands of Sir John Wogan. The Castle and estate is now run by the Picton Castle Trust, a registered charity, and is no longer occupied by Wogan's descendants, the Philipps family (see Baron Milford and Viscount St Davids). It is of unusual construction and has been remodelled several times during its history. It is a Grade I listed building.
