Utopia (2015 Film)
''Utopia'' is a 2015 Afghan drama film directed by Hassan Nazer and Produced by Chris Robb. The film was selected as the Afghan entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards but it was not nominated. However, it was disqualified a few days prior to its Academy screening for having too much dialogue in English. The Afghan filmmakers union tried to appeal, bringing the language breakdown by minutes, but they were unsuccessful. Hassan Nazer
Hassan Nazer ( fa, حسن ناظر) is a British-Iranian film director, film editor, producer and a judge in international film festivals. He was the head of jury team in SAARC Film Festival 2019 which was held in Sri Lanka. Career Now in his early forties, Hassan’s successful Aberdeen-based restaurant business Cafe Harmony has allowed him to self-finance three feature films in the decade before Winners. Until now, he has never been supported practically or financially by the Scottish or wider UK film industry, preferring to shape his own destiny working at extreme low-budgets, learning his craft and making a name for himself in Iran, India and Afghanistan. Nazer studied at art university in Tehran. After moving to UK, he attended the University of Aberdeen where he studied Cinema. Arun Bali
Arun Bali (23 December 1942 – 7 October 2022) was an Indian actor who has worked in numerous films and television series. He played the part of King Porus in the 1991 period drama ''Chanakya (TV series), Chanakya'', Kunwar Singh in the Doordarshan soap opera ''Swabhimaan'' and the Chief Minister of undivided Bengal, Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, in the controversial and critically acclaimed 2000 film ''Hey Ram''. In the 2000s, he became known for his "grandfatherly" roles like that of Harshvardhan Wadhwa in ''Kumkum (TV series), Kumkum'' and has even garnered popular awards for the same. In 2001, the prominent writer, actor and director Lekh Tandon counted Bali amongst his favorite actors. He died at his home in suburban Mumbai on 7 October 2022, at the age of 79 and was treated for Myasthenia gravis prior to his death. Afghanistan has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 2002, following the fall of the country's previous Taliban government. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. This is a list of submissions to the 88th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. Nine shortlisted contenders were revealed a week before the announcement of the Oscar nominations.
