Upper Silver Creek (Coyote Creek Tributary)
Upper Silver Creek is a northwestward-flowing stream originating in the Edenvale Hills in southeast San Jose, Santa Clara County, California. It was diverted for flood control due west where it is tributary to Coyote Creek, whose waters flow to south San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. History Historically, Silver Creek was known as Arroyo de Socayre and ran through the Rancho Socayre. Silver Creek was probably named for its silvery appearance, although the word "silver" may have been used to indicate nearby quicksilver (mercury ore) deposits. San Francisco Bay
San Francisco Bay is a large tidal estuary in the U.S. state of California, and gives its name to the San Francisco Bay Area. It is dominated by the big cities of San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland. San Francisco Bay drains water from approximately 40 percent of California. Water from the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers, and from the Sierra Nevada mountains, flow into Suisun Bay, which then travels through the Carquinez Strait to meet with the Napa River at the entrance to San Pablo Bay, which connects at its south end to San Francisco Bay. Rancho Yerba Buena
Rancho Yerba Buena or Rancho Socayre was a Mexican land grant in present day Santa Clara County, California given in 1833 by Governor José Figueroa to Antonio Chaboya (also spelled Chavoya or Chabolla). The grant was between Coyote Creek on the west and the foothills, and encompassed present day Evergreen neighborhood of southeast San José. History Francisco Xavier Antonio Chaboya (1803–1865) was the son of De Anza Expedition soldier Marcos Chaboya, and a brother of Anastasio Chaboya, grantee of Rancho Sanjon de los Moquelumnes. Antonio Chaboya married his first wife Maria Juliana Feliciana Rosario Buitron in 1826. After her death, he married Maria Ramona Encarnacion Higuera in 1846. Evergreen, also known as Evergreen Valley, is a large district of San Jose, California, located in East San Jose. History Evergreen was originally part of Rancho Yerba Buena, a Mexican-era rancho grant given to Antonio Chaboya, a member of a prominent, local Californio family, by Governor José Figueroa. It is not a geological feature recognized in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). It is located on Capitol Expressway and stands next to Reid–Hillview Airport. The Santa Clara Valley Water District (also known as Valley Water) provides stream stewardship, wholesale water supply and flood protection for Santa Clara County, California, in the southern San Francisco Bay Area. Steelhead Trout
Steelhead, or occasionally steelhead trout, is the common name of the anadromous form of the coastal rainbow trout or redband trout (O. m. gairdneri). Steelhead are native to cold-water tributaries of the Pacific basin in Northeast Asia and North America. Like other sea-run (anadromous) trout and salmon, steelhead spawn in freshwater, smolts migrate to the ocean to forage for several years and adults return to their natal streams to spawn.
