''Unwound'' is the fourth studio album by the American post-hardcore band Unwound. The album was originally intended to be their debut, but was eventually pushed back three years later. Trouser Press called the album "one of their best". Background and Recording Recorded in May 1992, ''Unwound'' wasn't released until August 1995, at which point Unwound had already recorded and released three other albums on Kill Rock Stars. "Kandy Korn Rituals" and "Against" (the latter of which is unlisted and attached to "Kandy Korn Rituals" on this album) were previously released on a 7" by Kill Rock Stars in 1992, along with a live song called "Hating in D". ''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who Dave Schulps and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''. Publication of the magazine ceased in 1984. The unexpired portion of mail subscriptions was completed by ''Rolling Stone'' sister publication ''Record'', which itself folded in 1985. The band was formed in 1988 in Tumwater and Olympia, Washington by vocalist/guitartist Justin Trosper, bassist Vern Rumsey and drummer Brandt Sandeno, and was largely based in Olympia throughout the 1990s until the band's dissolution in 2002. Unwound's best known lineup included Trosper, Rumsey and longtime drummer Sara Lund, who replaced Sandeno in 1992. A box set or (its original name) boxed set is a set of items (for example, a compilation of books, musical recordings, films or television programs) traditionally packaged in a box and offered for sale as a single unit. Music Artists and bands with an extremely long and successful career often have anthology or "essential" collections of their boxes of music released as box sets. These often include rare and never-before-released tracks. Vern Rumsey
Vernon Emmry Aldo Rumsey (January 24, 1973 – August 6, 2020) was an American musician. He rose to prominence as the bassist for the band Unwound. He generally played a Fender Jazz bass. He was also a recording engineer who has worked with bands such as Blonde Redhead, KARP, Enemymine, Novex and Replicator. Rumsey played bass guitar on the Blonde Redhead record ''Fake Can Be Just as Good'', and co-ran the label Punk in My Vitamins, with his bandmates Justin Trosper and Sara Lund. He was also in the bands Long Hind Legs, Oslo, Fitz of Depression, and Witchypoo, and (in 2009) was playing in the band Flora v. Fauna. Kill Rock Stars is an independent record label founded in 1991 by Slim Moon and Tinuviel Sampson, and based in both Olympia, Washington, and Portland, Oregon. The label has released a variety of work in different genres, but was originally known for its commitment to underground punk rock bands and the Olympia area music scene. Post-hardcore is a punk rock music genre that maintains the aggression and intensity of hardcore punk but emphasizes a greater degree of creative expression.
