''Unman, Wittering and Zigo'' is a 1971 British thriller film directed by John Mackenzie and starring David Hemmings, Douglas Wilmer and Carolyn Seymour. It is adapted by Simon Raven from Giles Cooper's 1958 radio drama '' Unman, Wittering and Zigo''. The movie's title was parodied in ''Little Britain'', and by Rowan Atkinson in a very well-received sketch for one of the early '' Secret Policeman's Ball'' concerts for Amnesty International. Plot A new teacher arrives at a school and begins to suspect his predecessor was murdered by the pupils, though his suspicions are written off as paranoia. He sets out to prevent the same fate from befalling him. John Mackenzie (film Director)
John Leonard Duncan Mackenzie (22 May 1928 – 8 June 2011) was a Scottish film director who worked in British film from the late 1960s, first as an assistant director and later as an independent director himself. Early life Mackenzie was born in Edinburgh, where he attended Holy Cross Academy. He studied history at the University of Edinburgh. He studied drama and joined Edinburgh's Gateway Theatre Company. He worked as a teacher and moved to London in 1960. Career Early career He began his career with Ken Loach, acting as the latter's assistant director on such works as ''Up the Junction'' (1965) and '' Cathy Come Home'' (1966). ''The Secret Policeman's Ball'' is a series of benefit shows staged initially in the United Kingdom to raise funds for the human rights organisation Amnesty International. The shows started in 1976 featuring popular British comedians but later included leading musicians and actors. The ''Secret Policeman's Ball'' shows are credited by many prominent entertainers with having galvanised them to become involved with Amnesty and other social and political causes in succeeding years. Llandudno
Llandudno (, ) is a seaside resort, town and community in Conwy County Borough, Wales, located on the Creuddyn peninsula, which protrudes into the Irish Sea. Dorothy "Dory" Veronica Previn ( Langan; October 22, 1925 – February 14, 2012) was an American lyricist, singer-songwriter and poet. During the late 1950s and 1960s, Previn was a lyricist on songs intended for motion pictures and, with her then husband, André Previn, received several Academy Award nominations. Michael Maurice Cashman, Baron Cashman (born 17 December 1950), is a British actor, politician, and LGBT rights activist. Thomas William Stevenson Rowbotham (8 April 1949 – 8 November 2022), known professionally as Tom Owen, was a British actor best known for playing Tom Simmonite in the sitcom ''Last of the Summer Wine''. He was the son of Bill Owen (actor), Bill Owen, who played William "Compo" Simmonite (the father of Tom Simmonite) in the show. Hubert Rees (27 April 1928 – 20 October 2009) was a Welsh character actor, known for his supporting roles in British television shows throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Early life Rees was born on 27 April 1928 in Abergavenny, Wales. Career Rees's early career in television series and shows in character and bit parts, often playing a police officer.
