''Unloved and Weeded Out'' is a compilation by American metalcore band Converge, on January 28, 2003, through Deathwish Inc. ''Unloved and Weeded Out'' features 14 tracks, some of which were previously released rarities while others were previously unreleased. Among other tracks, the album features five demo tracks that were recorded in guitarist Kurt Ballou's parents' basement before signing to Equal Vision Records and studio versions were released on ''When Forever Comes Crashing'', the three tracks that originally made up the 1995 ''Unloved and Weeded Out'' EP and one track from Converge's out-of-print debut album ''Halo in a Haystack''. Converge (band)
Converge is an American hardcore punk band formed by vocalist Jacob Bannon and guitarist Kurt Ballou in Salem, Massachusetts in 1990. During the recording of their seminal fourth album ''Jane Doe'', the group became a four-piece with the departure of guitarist Aaron Dalbec and the addition of bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller. This lineup has remained intact since. They have released nine studio albums, three live albums, and numerous EPs. The band's sound is rooted in hardcore and also features frequent influences from heavy metal. They are considered pioneers of metalcore as well as its subgenre mathcore. Converge have enjoyed a relatively high level of recognition. Equal Vision Records
Equal Vision Records is an independent record label based in Albany, New York. It was founded in the early 1990s by Ray Cappo, singer for the punk bands Youth of Today, Shelter, and Better Than a Thousand. The label originally existed solely to distribute Shelter and other Krishna releases. In 1992, label manager Steve Reddy bought Equal Vision from Cappo. The focus was expanded and a wider variety of bands were brought on board. According to ''Punk News'', the mid-to-late '90s saw a redoubling of the Equal Vision's hardcore efforts with such signings as One King Down and Ten Yard Fight. By the end of the '90s Equal Vision Records (EVR) had a stable of hardcore and punk bands, having added Bane, Trial, Converge and Saves the Day to its roster in the latter part of the decade. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. Stephen Brodsky
Stephen Brodsky is an American rock musician best known as a member of Cave In, Mutoid Man, New Idea Society and Old Man Gloom. He also has a solo career and is a former member of Converge, Kid Kilowatt, Parasite and Pet Genius. History Stephen Brodsky was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in Methuen, Massachusetts. He has cited Slash as a major influence in his interest in the guitar. He played in his first band in middle school, a two-piece called Parasite that featured drummer John-Robert Conners. In early 1995, Brodsky formed the metallic hardcore band Cave In with Jay Frechette. Aaron Dalbec
Bane was an American hardcore punk band that began in 1995 as a side project between Aaron Dalbec (then of Converge) and Damon Bellorado. Dalbec approached Matt Firestone to sing and they played under the moniker of Gateway for a few shows, before Firestone parted ways to focus on other projects. Dalbec then approached Aaron Bedard (who had previously sung for the Worcester, Massachusetts hardcore band Backbone) about singing for Bane. They went into the studio in December 1995 with a few friends and released a five-song demo. The next year saw the release of their first EP, and many shows throughout central Massachusetts. In early 1997, Bane released ''Free to Think, Free to Be'' EP, and in 1998 the band released the '' Holding This Moment'' 7" and CD collection, and embarked upon their first US tour. Ben Koller
Ben Koller (born July 29, 1980) is an American drummer who has played with Converge, Mutoid Man, Killer Be Killed and All Pigs Must Die. He started playing a full drum kit at age 14. Musical career Early bands (1997–1999) Koller played in the bands Where's Ben? and Bastian, before playing in the grindcore band Force Fed Glass. He started playing for the band in 1997. Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, who is also a successful producer, recorded an album for Force Fed Glass. Ballou later started a side project called Blue/Green Heart and selected Koller as his drummer having already been familiar with his talent from Force Fed Glass. Nathaniel Newton (born December 20, 1961) is a former American football guard in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers. He also was a member of the Tampa Bay Bandits of the United States Football League. He played college football at Florida A&M University. Early years Newton attended Jones High School where he played football, basketball, wrestling and shot put. In football he played as a fullback until his junior year, when he outgrew the position and was moved to the defensive line. Although he had Division I colleges recruiting him, he chose to remain close to home and accepted a football scholarship from Florida A&M University. Jacob Bannon (born October 15, 1976) is an American musician who is the vocalist, lyricist and graphic artist for the metalcore band Converge. He is the co-founder and owner of the record label Deathwish Inc. and the author of many visual works for independent punk rock and heavy metal musicians. Bannon has also composed and performed experimental music as Supermachiner with Ryan Parker and more recently as Wear Your Wounds. Personal life Bannon was born in 1976. ''Halo in a Haystack'' is the debut album by American metalcore band Converge, released in 1994 through Earthmaker Records. Overview To fund the making of the record, vocalist Jacob Bannon saved up money from working at a nursing home. The record was released as a black vinyl and is not available in any other format. Only 1000 copies of this record were made and the record has not been reprinted since. However all of the record's tracks with the exception of the 9th track "Exhale" can be found on later Converge releases such as 1995's ''Caring and Killing'' and 2002's ''Unloved & Weeded Out''.
