University Of Queensland Rugby Club
The University of Queensland Rugby Club is an Australian rugby club, based at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Queensland. They currently compete in the Queensland Premier Rugby competition. They were formed in 1911, as rugby was adopted by the Sports Association at the University of Queensland as a major sport. The University of Queensland Rugby Football Club, although recently incorporated, was founded in 1911. Since then the club has seen several thousands of young men and women enjoy the game of Rugby and develop many friendships. The club is affiliated with the Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) which is one of the member unions of the Australian Rugby Union (ARU). The club is also affiliated with The University of Queensland and has a relationship with local junior club, the Kenmore Bears. St Lucia, Queensland
St Lucia is a riverside suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the St Lucia had a population of 12,574 people. The University of Queensland is the main attraction of St Lucia, with the university, and residential colleges covering a large proportion of the suburb. Jimmy Clark (rugby Union)
Jimmy Clark (9 September 1908 – 11 April 1979) was an Australian rugby union player, a flanker who made five representative Test appearances for the Australian national team in the 1930s, captaining in the side in one of these matches. He made 15 appearances for the Queensland state team from 1930 being the period of the revival of the code in Queensland, following its dormancy since World War I. Rugby career Clark was born in Mount Perry near Bundaberg, Queensland and attended St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace. He made his state representative debut for Queensland against a visiting British side in 1930. Duncan Hall
Duncan Hall (24 August 192518 January 2011) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s and 1950s, singled out as having been amongst the greatest of the 20th century. He played in the Brisbane Rugby League premiership for Fortitude Valley Diehards and represented Queensland and Australia. He has been named amongst the nation's finest footballers of the 20th century. Away from football Hall worked as a hotelier and bookmaker, and in his later years worked at the Broncos Leagues Club. Geoff Shaw (rugby)
Geoffrey Arnold Shaw (born 27 December 1948) is an Australian former national representative rugby union player who played for and captained the Wallabies. He made state representative appearances for both New South Wales and Queensland over an eleven-year period from 1969. Rugby career From the Illawarra region as a nineteen-year-old Shaw first represented for New South Wales Country against New Zealand in 1968. The following year he debuted for Australia in a Test match against Wales. In that same year 1969, Shaw was selected to tour with the Wallabies on the 1969 Australia rugby union tour of South Africa. Shaw was one of the new boys in the squad and at 20 years old, the youngest. He played in sixteen of the twenty-six matches including one Test match. Australian National Rugby Union Team
The Australia national rugby union team, nicknamed the Wallabies, is the representative national team in the sport of rugby union for the nation of Australia. The team first played at Sydney in 1899, winning their first test match against the touring British Isles team. Australia have competed in all nine Rugby World Cups, winning the final on two occasions and also finishing as runner-up twice. Australia beat England at Twickenham in the final of the 1991 Rugby World Cup and won again in 1999 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff when their opponents in the final were France. Mark Loane
Mark Edward Loane AM (born 11 July 1954) is an Australian former rugby union football player, who played 89 games for Queensland and 28 Tests for the Wallabies. Described by Bret Harris in his book, ''The Marauding Maroons'', as "the closest thing to a folk hero Queensland has seen", Loane was noted for devastating barging runs and on occasion the game would be won by one of these characteristic bursts. Lloyd McDermott
Lloyd Clive McDermott (1 November 1939 – 6 April 2019), also known as Mullenjaiwakka, was an Australian barrister and rugby union player. He was the first Australian Aboriginal barrister and the second Aboriginal person to represent his country in rugby union, playing for the Wallabies against the New Zealand All Blacks in 1962. During South Africa's era of apartheid, McDermott made a principled decision to withdraw from the squad rather than play as an "honorary white" on a subsequent South African tour. Charles Wilson (rugby)
Charles 'Chilla' Roy Wilson (4 May 1931 – 2 September 2016) was an Australian national representative rugby union flanker and national captain. He was tour manager on a number of Wallaby international tours of the 1980s including the 1984 Wallaby Grand Slam tour of the British Isles. Family and early life Wilson was born at Ashgrove in Queensland. He attended Marist College Ashgrove initially (which was evacuated to Eagle Heights at Mt. Tamborine in the wartime years between 1942 and 1944) and then Brisbane Grammar School where he played schoolboy rugby. Wilson continued playing at the University of Queensland, while he pursued his medical studies. His older brother Dr Fergus Wilson, who later became an orthopaedic surgeon, was also involved with rugby at the university and later coached various teams. Keith Winning
Keith Charles "Arch" Winning (1928 – 2003) was an Australian national representative rugby union player for Australia. He captained the national side in the sole Test match appearance he made. Biography Born in Maleny, Queensland Winning's early rugby was played at Brisbane Grammar and at the University of Queensland. He burst onto the representative scene in 1947 at aged 19 playing for Queensland. Dr. John Clement "Clem" Windsor (2 February 1923 – 25 January 2007) was a rugby union player who represented Australia and a surgeon. Rugby career Windsor was born in Brisbane, Queensland and played fullback in club rugby for the University of Queensland Rugby Club. He made his debut for Queensland in 1945. Two years later he made his test debut for the Wallabies, becoming the 353th player to do so and the tenth from the UQ rugby club. Windsor only played one test, the second Bledisloe Cup match of 1947 played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where the All Blacks defeated Australia 27 points to 14. After this teat, he was named in the squad for the 1947–48 Australia rugby union tour of Britain, Ireland, France and North America. Carrabo Italo Ansell "Bill" Monti (30 June 1914 – 1977) was a rugby union player who represented Australia. Monti was born in the Richmond River area of New South Wales and attended St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill. He played at lock in club rugby for the University of Queensland Rugby Club.
