University And College Curling
With the inclusion of curling into many FISU Universiades many countries have had to hold national championships to determine a representative. International University Sports Federation (FISU) Canada In Canada, University curling is played in a variety of levels. U Sports has sanctioned the University Curling Championships since 2008. The winners of the event will represent Canada at the FISU Universiades (in odd years). Canadian Interuniversity Sport 2006 Championships Although this event was not fully sanctioned by the CIS or CCA, the winners still went on to represent Canada at the 2007 Winter Universiade. Men's champs were the Saskatchewan Huskies and the women were from the Calgary Dinos. The women's team went on to win Gold. Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. A game usually consists of eight or ten ends. The player can induce a curved path, described as ''curl'', by causing the stone to slowly rotate as it slides. Curling At The 2011 Winter Universiade
Curling at the 2011 Winter Universiade took place at the Milli Piyango Curling Arena from January 27 to February 6. Ten men's and women's teams were qualified to compete in the Universiade based on their performance at the previous competition and at the 2009 and 2010 World Junior Curling Championships and the 2009 and 2010 Men's and Women's Curling Championships. They competed in a round-robin format, and the top four teams advanced to a single knockout round to determine the final placements. South Korea won the gold-medal match over Switzerland in 9 ends, while Great Britain won a close match over Russia in an extra end. Qualification Men *China withdrew and were replaced with Poland. U Sports
U Sports (stylized as U SPORTS) is the national sport governing body of university sport in Canada, comprising the majority of degree-granting universities in the country. Its equivalent body for organized sports at colleges in Canada is the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Some institutions are members of both bodies for different sports. Its name until October 20, 2016, was Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS; french: Sport interuniversitaire canadien, SIC, links=no). Saskatchewan Huskies
The University of Saskatchewan began in 1907 and has operated teams that compete with others since 1911. The term Huskie Athletics is defined as those student athletes from the University of Saskatchewan that compete in elite interuniversity competition administered by U Sports and its members, both as regions and as individual institutions. The University of Saskatchewan is a member of the Canada West Regional Association, one of four such associations within U Sports. The Huskie Athletics program is administered at the University of Saskatchewan by the college of Kinesiology. At various times in its history, Huskie Athletics has offered teams in 24 different sports. Calgary Dinos
The Calgary Dinos are the athletic teams that represent the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. They were known as the "Dinosaurs" but usually referred to as the "Dinos" until 1999, when the name was officially shortened. Some of its venues are the Jack Simpson Gymnasium (basketball m/w, volleyball m/w, track and field m/w), McMahon Stadium (football, soccer m/w), Hawkings Field (field hockey), University of Calgary Aquatic Centre (swimming, often shortened to Aquatic Centre) and a 200m Running Track (cross-country and track & field practices). The men and women hockey teams play at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena. Historically in the rare case of scheduling conflicts, both men's and women's hockey have used the Max Bell Centre for games.
