Water Polo
Water polo is a competitive team sport played in water between two teams of seven players each. The game consists of four quarters in which the teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match. Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Excluding the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. It is typically played in an all-deep pool where players cannot touch the bottom. A game consists mainly of the players swimming to move about the pool, treading water (mainly using the eggbeater kick), passing the ball, and shooting at the goal. Teamwork, tactical thinking and awareness are also highly important aspects. Water polo is a highly physical and demanding sport and has frequently been cited as one of the most difficult to play. Guy Baker
Guy Baker was the head coach for the United States women's national water polo team competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympic games. He is now the Director Of Olympic Development of USA Water Polo. Baker had guided the team to a silver medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics, a bronze medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics, and a silver medal in the 2008 Summer Olympics (only players receive a medal at the Olympics), becoming one of the most successful water polo coach in Olympic history. In 2018, he was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame. Career Prior to becoming the head coach for the national team, he was the water polo coach at UCLA and California State University, Long Beach, beginning in 1985. Margaret Dingeldein
Margaret "Margie" Dingeldein (born May 30, 1980, in Merced, California) is an American water polo player who won a bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics. Her position is attacker, and she is considered an excellent perimeter shooter. High school Dingeldein attended Merced High School and was named a water polo high school All-American and member of the U.S. Junior National Team. In 1998, she graduated valedictorian of her high school class and was named a National Merit Finalist. College As a freshman at Stanford University in 1999, Dingeldein was the Cardinals' top scorer with 45 goals. She earned first-team all-tournament at the water polo National Tournament, as well as Academic All-American. Heather Petri
Heather Danielle Petri (born June 13, 1978) is an American water polo player, who won the silver medal with the US women's national team at the 2000 Summer Olympics, a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics, a silver medal in Beijing in 2008 and the gold medal in London 2012. She is one of four female players who competed in water polo at four Olympics; and one of two female athletes who won four Olympic medals in water polo. Her position is attacker. Petri began playing water polo on the boys' team in high school, but helped begin a girls' water polo program at Miramonte High School and was team captain for two years. In 1997 she was recruited by UC Berkeley coach Maureen O'Toole, and played collegiate water polo from 1997–2001. Rachel Fattal
Rachel Fattal (born December 10, 1993) is an American water polo player. Fattal attended Los Alamitos High School and graduated in 2012. She then attended UCLA, where she majored in history and played water polo; she graduated in 2017. She was part of the American team winning the gold medal at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, where she played in the driver position. She was also part of the gold medal-winning American team at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She was the top sprinter at the 2016 Olympics, with 17 sprints won. Ashleigh Elizabeth Johnson (born September 12, 1994) is an American water polo player considered by many to be the best goalkeeper in the world. She was part of the American team that won the gold medal at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships. In 2016, she became the first African-American woman to make the US Olympic team in water polo. She was part of the gold-medal winning 2016 and 2020 U.S. women's water polo Olympic teams. Early life Johnson was raised by her mother, Donna Johnson. Johnson grew up with four siblings (three brothers and one sister), all of whom play water polo. Her brothers are Blake, Julius and William.
