Americas Federation Of Netball Associations
The Americas Federation of Netball Associations (AFNA), is the governing body for the organized sport of netball in the Americas. For netball's organizational purposes, the Americas Region, as agreed upon by World Netball (WN, known previously as the International Netball Federation or INF), covers a total of fifty-four countries. The Americas Region currently has 1 Associate Member and 15 Full Regional & World Netball Members. The current president of the AFNA is Marva Bernard. World Netball was previously known as the International Netball Federation and the International Federation of Netball Associations and is the worldwide governing body for Netball. Netball in the United States is a sport which has only limited popular support. The sport is traditionally a female dominated sport. However, in the United States of America, there are few netball clubs, most play taking place between high school or college sides, almost entirely of females. Netball is a ball sport played on a court by two teams of seven players. It is among a rare number of sports which have been created exclusively for female competitors. The sport is played on indoor and outdoor netball courts and is specifically played in schools. Netball is most popularly played in Commonwealth nations. A common misunderstanding of the sport's origins has resulted in the mistaken belief that netball was created to prevent women from playing basketball. However, the sport is the result of Clara Baer's misinterpretation of its rules. Baer had asked James Naismith, the Canadian inventor of basketball, to send her a copy of the rules, and Baer's errors resulted in what marked the beginning of the development of a separate sport.
