United States House Committee On Mines And Mining
The United States House Committee on Mines and Mining is a defunct committee of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Committee on Mines and Mining was created on December 19, 1865, for consideration of subjects relating to mining interests. It exercised jurisdiction over the Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines, the establishment of mining schools and mining experimental stations, mineral land laws, the welfare of men working in mines, mining debris, relief in cases of mineral contracts connected with the prosecution of war, the mining of radium ore, and the Government's fuel yards in the District of Columbia. In 1947, the committee was abolished and its duties were transferred to the United States House Committee on Public Lands. A congressional committee is a legislative sub-organization in the United States Congress that handles a specific duty (rather than the general duties of Congress). Committee membership enables members to develop specialized knowledge of the matters under their jurisdiction. As "little legislatures", the committees monitor ongoing governmental operations, identify issues suitable for legislative review, gather and evaluate information, and recommend courses of action to their parent body. Mahlon Morris Garland (May 4, 1856 – November 19, 1920) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Early life and career Garland was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He moved with his parents to Alexandria, Pennsylvania. He learned the trade of puddling and heating, and joined the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers, and later became president for the organization. He was a member of the select council of Pittsburgh in 1886 and 1887. George Franklin Huff (July 16, 1842 – April 18, 1912) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Biography George F. Huff was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania. He attended the public schools in Middletown, Pennsylvania, and later in Altoona, Pennsylvania. At the age of eighteen he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad car shops in Altoona. Frank Eddy
Frank Marion Eddy (April 1, 1856 – January 13, 1929) was a United States representative from Minnesota's 7th congressional district. Eddy was born in Pleasant Grove Township, Minnesota before moving to Iowa in 1860 with his family. They returned in 1863 to Olmsted County, Minnesota, and settled near Elmira. In 1867, they moved to Sauk Centre, Minnesota where Eddy attended the common schools Eddy taught school in a rural district before joining the Northern Pacific Railroad Company as a land examiner in 1881 and 1882. He then moved to Glenwood, Minnesota and served as clerk of the district court of Pope County from 1884 to 1893. In 1894, Eddy was elected as the first United States Representative from Minnesota who was a native of the state. Rousseau Owen Crump (May 20, 1843 – May 1, 1901) was a politician and businessman from the U.S. state of Michigan. Crump was born in Pittsford, New York, the eldest son of Samuel and Sarah (Cutting) Crump. His parents had settled in Pittsford in April 1842 after emigrating from England soon after marrying. His father was born and educated in Kent, while his mother was from Suffolk. His father had experience as a builder and continued his trade in the United States.
